TERM 2 - WEEK 2 - 2020
From the Principal's Desk

NSW Training Awards
One of the major differences between the Higher School Certificate pathway that is offered at our College and that of traditional educational pathways is the manner in which success is measured. In a traditional setting the ATAR is the measure of success. A Band 6 is the highest recognition for student achievement in a course with the most outstanding individual in each subject being placed on a “First in Course Merit List”.  In Vocational Education and Training (VET) an equivalent recognition is the NSW Training Awards. The NSW Training Awards are conducted annually by Training Services NSW to recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector. To be nominated for these awards is an outstanding achievement, to be a finalist places students in elite company. I would like to acknowledge and thank all staff and employers who provide students with the opportunities needed to develop their skills and knowledge to such a high level. I would also like to thank Mrs Claire McGregor, our College Industry Liaison Officer, for all of her work ‘behind the scenes’ in supporting the students and ensuring that their talent is recognised. It is outstanding that these students have been nominated in the following categories:

Year 12 School-based Apprentice/Trainee
  • Keagan Wadwell - Joinery
  • Mickayla Ackroyd - Hairdressing
  • Hannah Reinke - Individual Support
  • Chloe Verdon - Individual Support
  • Holly Auld - Business
  • Emily Rourke - Equine Studies
  • Angus Patterson - Glass and Glazing
  • Kayla Chapman - IT/Digital Media
  • Lara Hickey - Tourism
VET in Schools Student of the Year
  • Nathaniel Bentley - Hospitality/Furniture Making
  • Ruby J Taylor - Business
  • Tayla Napier - Individual Support/Hospitality
  • Madeline Young - Retail/Hospitality/Tourism
  • Jaimeel Khan - Construction
  • Cassie Wheeler - Early Childhood
As the premier awards for vocational education and training in NSW, the awards are a great way to receive recognition for the effort of our students, teachers and employers in VET education. Congratulations to all the nominees on their achievement, it is recognition well deserved.

Return to School Survey
I hope that you have seen the Return to School survey that was sent to all families earlier this week and have had the chance to respond. The main purpose of the survey is to allow staff to have an idea of the number of students that we can expect to have onsite for the staged return to face-to-face learning next week. If you haven’t had the opportunity to complete the survey yet, we would appreciate it if you were able to do so. I can assure you that we have all been very frustrated by the impact of COVID–19 and we are very much looking forward to having students back onsite (albeit in a staged manner) next week.

Happy Mother’s Day
I would like to wish all of the mums in our Newman community a very happy Mother’s Day this Sunday. I hope that you have the opportunity to spend time with family (even if it is virtually), relax and be recognised for the special role that all mums play in everyone’s life. Below is a prayer, in the form of a poem, that I offer to all mums this weekend.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all.

More Than A Mother – by Kari Keshmiry

When God set the world in place,
when He hung the stars up in space,
when He made the land and the sea,
then He made you and me.

He sat back and saw all that was good,
He saw things to be as they should.
Just one more blessing He had in store;
He created a mother, but whatever for?

He knew a mother would have a special place
to shine His reflection on her child’s face.
A mother will walk the extra mile
just to see her children smile.

She’ll work her fingers to the bone
to make a house into a home.
A mother is there to teach and guide,
a mother will stay right by your side.

A mother will lend a helping hand
until you have the strength to stand.
She’ll pick you up when you are down,
when you need a friend she’ll stick around.

She’ll be there through your pain and strife,
she’ll stay constant in your life.
A mother is one who listens well,
will keep her word; will never tell.

A mother never pokes or pries
but stands quietly by your side,
giving you the strength you need,
encouraging you to succeed.

A mother is one who can be strong
when you need someone to lean on.
You’re more than a mother to me;
a reflection of Him in your face I see,
a love that knows no boundaries.

I’m glad that you chose to be
all this and more to me.
You share a love that knows no end,
you’re more than my mother,
you are my friend.

Assistant Principal's Message
Mission and Pastoral Care

Throughout this crisis there has been a lot of focus on students and staff at schools - how they are coping, what the learning and teaching looks like in this environment and how to transition back to some normality. But, I wanted to take the chance to acknowledge all the parents, carers, guardians and support people who are essential and appreciated. You have managed and adapted as necessary to this crisis. Some of you have experienced extreme upheaval and stress, not to mention supporting your child’s learning at home, while managing the household, your jobs and other members of your family. It has been exhausting.

So here is a little snippet from Reachout.com with some positive affirmations and strategies. You are doing an amazing job, you are appreciated and we all respect the love, care and support you offer to your children every single day.

You can't pour from an empty cup
It’s easy to forget about your own needs while you’re trying to support your teenager through the current situation. You will be more in control and better able to support those around you if you’re feeling well.
  • Self-compassion. Go easy on yourself – you’re doing the best you can during an extremely difficult time.

  • The basics. It’s important to pay attention to the foundations of wellbeing during this time: getting enough sleep, eating regular meals, moving your body, and having some time to yourself – even if it’s only a few minutes a day.

  • Model healthy coping. Check in with yourself: Are you feeling frustrated? Calm? Angry? Okay? Sad? Happy? All of these feelings are normal, and it’s very common at a time like this to fluctuate among them. Taking notice of your emotions will help you to determine if you’re okay to keep going, or whether you need a time out or more support.

Go easy on yourself
There’s no doubt that these are tough times to be parenting a teenager. Recognise everything you are doing to create a stable home environment and try not to focus on the areas that aren’t operating as well as usual. You’re doing the best you can – give yourself props for that.

Learning and Teaching

Dear Students and Families

Earlier this week I emailed all students with a new timetable that will commence on Monday 11 May 2020. This new timetable allows for one year group to be onsite per day and will maximise the amount of time students spend in their practical classrooms, such as workshops, kitchens and prac rooms.

Additional to the timetable, I sat with Mr Adrian Ryan (Student Services Manager) and sent out a video message about what students should expect on their return to the College. Some of the points in the video are below:

YEAR 12:
Monday = face to face teaching
Tuesday = online learning
Wednesday = independent study
Thursday =  face to face teaching
Friday = face to face teaching

YEAR 11:
Monday = online learning
Tuesday = face to face teaching
Wednesday =  face to face teaching
Thursday = independent study
Friday = online learning

Please remember:
  • Full school uniform on your days at the College.
  • Bring any PPE / prac gear that you may require.
  • Normal bell times apply.
  • There will 30+ hand sanitising stations spread around the College site.
If you have any questions please contact your PC teacher, subject teachers or phone the office.

We are very excited about getting back to face-to-face teaching and look forward to the students return.

Regards

Emotional Wellbeing:  Participate in a self-care activity

Self-care refers to activities and practices that can help you to reduce your stress and enhance your overall well-being: essentially, proactively taking care of yourself.

Some self-care activities you can try are yoga or pilates, read a book, have a bath, watch a movie or just take a long nap.

Student Services News

Hi Newman family

Hopefully you are all safe and well and are looking forward to returning to the College next week, as we move into the next phase of our blended learning. Schools are a quiet and lonely place without smiling student faces, so we all look forward to seeing you here next week.

Year 12 - return 3 days per week: Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Year 11 - return 2 days per week: Tuesday and Wednesday.

For the other days that you are not at the College, online learning continues, so please connect with your classroom learning via the platform your teacher has set up with you.

A friendly reminder to all students that it is a normal school day when you are at the College and therefore the College uniform policy still remains. Please wear the correct uniform, be clean shaven and remove any facial piercings.

As students return to the College it will be great to catch up with everyone and to have some face to face conversations. Please remember social distancing protocols, practice sanitation protocols, such as washing hands and using the hand sanitiser stations around the College.

We look forward to seeing you here next week. Stay safe and take care.

Student Services Manager

Furniture Making

The Furniture Making department has been kept busy over recent weeks by undertaking a kitchen making project in joint collaboration with Nautilus Secondary Community College. After recently moving premises, Nautilus College needed a kitchen constructed on a small budget and students from Newman Senior Technical College's Furniture Making class gave their time and skills to achieve this.

Nautilus teacher and project organiser, Mr Nigel Harding was ecstatic the project could be completed and installed by students and commented what a fantastic learning opportunity and community based project it was.

Counselling is a process of talking about and working through what is on your mind or what is going on in your life. Through talking and getting things out, you are often able to find some clarity for your concerns. In this current situation it may be helpful to talk about what is happening for you.

Everything in the counselling session is kept private and confidential, however if we believe you are going to cause harm to yourself, or someone else or could be involved in a highly illegal activity, our counsellor or teachers are mandated to report.

Our College counsellor, Linda McGuire is located upstairs in the Futures Hub – Pathways and Careers area.

Catholic Care Of The Aged Currently Taking New Admissions

The situation that is facing us regarding Corona-virus (COVID-19) is a constantly changing one.

Catholic Care of the Aged services including Residential Care, Respite Care, Home Care and Independent Villages remain operational in our community. It is our intention and our aim to be able to continue taking new admissions, to welcome and support individuals and their families at their time of need.

Our priority remains the health, safety and wellbeing of our residents, clients, team members and communities. To minimise contact and maintain the guidelines specified by the Australian Government, we have introduced several changes to the way our services are delivered.

We are enforcing mandatory sanitisation for staff and authorised visitors on the site, COVID-19 screening continues along with temperature checks to ensure reduced risk of exposure. Staff are utilising personal protective equipment (PPE) and practising high-level sanitisation procedures and our routine quality infection controls remain in place.

If you or someone you know is considering Residential Care, Respite Care or Home Care we are currently taking new admissions and would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have. Simply contact our Client Relationship Team on 5525 3600, or email enquiries.cca@stagnesparish.org.au
