Dear friends of Cooler Communities,

We hope you have time and opportunities to re-charge your batteries this summer and are managing to stay cool! Our home-office cat Simo is showing how.
More on opportunities to do this, courtesy of the utilities, follow below.

We’ve been brainstorming how we could be of service in Pioneer Valley during these times when some of our regular programming within the fields of both energy efficiency and education had to be postponed.

When we heard that cooling centers might not open in Springfield, we were concerned. And we were happy to discover wearable cooling products: neck wraps that only require water to work and continue to cool the wearer for hours. (You might try this yourself. It's easy to improvise - wearing moist clothing helps a lot as well!)

We have donated 1200 of these Coolers to those in Springfield who are homebound, quarantined, recovering from COVID, and/or without a/c.
We are grateful to the teams at the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts, ARISE, and REVITALIZE for helping to distribute them to those who can most benefit.

Another 1000 of these “Coolers" went to Springfield Public Schools which will distribute them to students in need - a big thank you to the office of Assistant Superintendent Lydia Martinez for taking such care while administrators are so busy planning for the fall.

Our schools are facing unprecedented challenges - we wish all those working there much support and some time to rest and re-charge!

The Cooler Communities Team
In the video below, Northampton students Amelia Bourne and Oliver Lawton explain what drew them to start working on a Cooler Communities event. They describe beautifully what keeps all of us on the team looking at ways to support all the schools and students this fall in making their project happen - virtually or in-person if it is safe to do so.
Our friends at the Hitchcock Center have come up with 24 ideas on how to be a "Salamander Super Hero."  These are fun indoor and outdoor activities (we are going to try the sun tea for sure!)

Learn more here and let us know how you do!
