Do You Really Need an Annual Exam? Yes!
A lot of women wonder if they really need to come in once a year for an annual well-woman exam, especially if they are seeing their PCP once a year. The current guideline from the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ACOG) is to continue annual well-woman visits.
First, let’s talk about what an annual exam includes:
- A thorough history, including personal and family history
- A complete physical exam, including breast exam and pelvic exam
- Laboratory screenings, which vary by age and risk factors
- Personalized recommendations to minimize health risks
Subjects covered at an Annual Well-Woman Exam:
- Your periods! The menstrual cycle is a “vital sign” to your overall well-being
- Bladder function
- Sexual function
- Family planning including contraception and pre-pregnancy planning
- Infectious disease screening
- Menopause assessment and guidance
- Cancer screening & prevention (breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, and colon) including personalized risk assessment and recommendations
- Genetic risk assessment and genetic testing if indicated
- Immunizations
- Cardiovascular risk assessment (this can include blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes evaluation)
- Obesity assessment and management
- Substance use and abuse
- Bone health / Osteoporosis screening and management
That’s a lot of important stuff! If you are due for your annual well-woman exam, don’t hesitate to call or schedule online. We look forward to seeing you,
Dr. Zaander and Dr. Salisbury
