Resetting your purpose: the key to working your way through this crisis

Welcome to the fourth weekly newsletter from Robertson Cooper offering free resources to support mental health and wellbeing during the Coronavirus pandemic.

As the world remains in a highly disrupted and uncertain phase of the pandemic, we continue to draw on the wellbeing science to support you through it. If you have missed previous editions, you can see a summary of the resources we have released so far here.

This week we are looking at the topic of 'purpose'. Central to our sense of wellbeing at any time, many of us have seen our core purpose shaken by events that have changed everything we took for granted. In turn, millions of workers are battling to maintain focus and motivation in a working world that is almost unrecognisable. As our Founding Director, Professor Ivan Robertson, noted in last week’s webinar, sense of purpose is critical at this stage of the crisis as we start to think about coming out of lockdown.

But there are steps we can all take to get back on track... to rediscover our purpose and adjust to ‘the new normal’. Below you’ll find a new toolkit to help you and your employees refresh their purpose
, along with a 'back to basics' video reminding you why purpose matters in the first place. In addition, we link to a recommended TED talk by Dan Ariely exploring the intricacies of purpose and finally there’s a video our other Founding Director Sir Cary Cooper recorded with Management Today with some very practical tips on how you can steer your way through our current circumstances.

But first... we have a special celebration
W
e'd like to take a moment to wish our Founding Director, Sir Cary Cooper a very happy birthday and it's a big one - he's 80 years old! Cary is a testimony to the power of health and wellbeing, passionately continuing to provide an enormous contribution to the conversation about wellbeing in the UK and beyond.

Purpose: How does it fit into our overall resilience?

Drawn from our archives, this video from our Founding Director, Prof. Ivan Robertson, sets the scene for how our sense of purpose forms the centre piece of our overall ability to healthily cope with pressure and change, and even to thrive in that context!
