Spring at Sustainable Northwest

As May begins, everyone here at SNW is continuing to work remotely and is particularly grateful for the sunny weather. We have some exciting announcements, including the awarding of a major USDA Wood Innovation Grant to boost markets for restoration wood. We are also closing in on launching an electric tractor pilot program in Oregon.

Are those of you with gardens spending more time there? Sustainable Northwest Wood is offering unique, easy-to-assemble restoration Western Juniper garden beds for curbside pickup.

Sincerely,

Greg Block, President

SNW Awarded Major Wood Innovation Grant

Sustainable Northwest received a USDA Wood Innovation Grant to develop a larger market for restoration wood with our anchor partners from Vaagen Brothers Lumber and Ochoco Lumber Company and nearby forest collaboratives. We will develop systems to track wood from restoration projects on federal forests to green building projects seeking to fulfill specific environmental and social goals.

The grant allows Sustainable Northwest to engage with mills, secondary manufacturers, building developers, and architects to create a unique and trackable supply chain. It also includes marketing materials to tell the story of restoration on federal forests and opportunities to use more sustainable wood in green building.

SNW Launches Electric Tractor Pilot Program

Sustainable Northwest and our partners are closing in on securing funding to launch an innovative pilot project in 2020 aiming to accelerate the electrification of our agricultural community. Similar to electric passenger vehicles, electric heavy equipment reduces diesel emissions, improves health and safety of workers, and provides needed savings for farmers.

To learn more about or support this project, contact Bridget Callahan, Energy Program Manager.
