Ward 6 Newsletter: May 2020

Published: May 5, 2020

Dear Ward 6 Neighbours and Friends,

Let’s remember who we are

These are anxious times and rough waters lie ahead. In tough times, it’s always important to remember who we are at our core. Calgary has been known as many things: Cowtown, an oil-town, a town of entrepreneurs. More than anything, we are a town of resilience. We have weathered many storms. Each time, we’ve been able to figure out a new and better way forward, and each time, we’ve found an opportunity among the obstacles. At no time in our history has it been more important to remember who we are.

Economic Resiliency Task Force

Back in April, the City struck a panel to support and promote economic resiliency. Along with Councillors Chahal, Chu and Magliocca, and a variety of community and business leaders, I’ve been working on identifying the best path for economic survival, resilience, and eventual recovery. Thank you

Thank you to everyone in the community who has done their part through social distancing to keep others safe and healthy.

A special thank you to our neighbours and friends on the front lines. From healthcare professionals to truck drivers, grocery store workers, utility suppliers, City crews, and teachers who have supported the community through the last few months – thank you for illustrating that we’re in this together, and we're for here for each other.

The comeback is greater than the setback

I have always been an optimist. I have seen many scenarios in which the comeback has been greater than the setback. Yet, as a father, a business owner, and a member of Council, I know is no silver bullet solution for our challenges. But through our people, our entrepreneurial spirit, our strong sense of community, and our civic pride, we will find a way to continue to thrive.

#SupportLocalYYC
Calgary has an undeniable community spirit that always comes together in challenging times and supporting local businesses is more important than ever. Local and small business is the backbone of our economy, employing thousands of Calgarians!

Every small act gives our business community hope. Here are the ways you can #SupportLocalYYC while physical distancing:

  • Buy from local businesses online
  • Purchase gift cards to use later
  • Order delivery or takeout from local restaurants
  • Leave positive reviews of businesses you love on social media
  • Spread the word about how businesses are shifting their services online

We'll Ride Again in 2021

There is no better display of community spirit, volunteerism, heritage and civic-pride than the Calgary Stampede.

The cancellation of this year's edition is a tough pill to swallow - and the right call.

We'll make it all up in 2021 with the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth!

Social Distancing on Pathways

An important reminder: when going outside, please try to maintain social-distancing by going one-way on the sidewalk.

It is illegal for anyone over the age of 14 to ride bicycles on the sidewalk.

Reminder from the Calgary Police Service: Slow Down in Playground Zones!

Playground zones are always in effect - 7 days a week, 365 days a year, 7:30am to 9 pm. Please slow down!

Retirement Announcement: Kathy Morgan

Kathy Morgan, my beloved executive assistant, retired at the end of April!

Kathy is one of the longest-serving individuals in the Councillor's Office - with a career spanning many years and many Aldermen/Councillors.

Kathy stated at the City of Calgary with the legendary Sue Higgins in 1998, until the "Alderbroad" retired in 2001. The two were like two peas in a pod. She went on to serve in the Offices of Aldermen McIver, Burrows, Connelly, and Councillor Pootmans, and did a stint at both the Centre for Performing Arts and the Calgary Police Service.

Kathy has been an integral part of my team. Not only has she helped take care of this newbie elected-official, she has been there everyday for my family, the Ward 6 Office, and the citizens of Calgary.

Hard-edged, bold, eccentric and one hell of a dresser, Kathy has a heart of gold and the personality to match it.

Kathy once described her friend Sue Higgins as "the last of the great broads". Kathy - you are a legend in your own right! While this is not farewell or goodbye, it's simply a new chapter in the great book of Kathy. Please join me in congratulating Kathy on her retirement!
