Savings from staying at home

Here is a bit of a shocker. Stop for a moment and think about one benefit that staying at home/sheltering in place has brought you. Believe it or not, you may actually be saving money every day and not even realizing it. It’s true. Even if you are at home and not getting your weekly paycheck because you are on a furlough, laid off, or even lost your job, hopefully by now you are now getting some help in the form of an unemployment check and a federal subsidy which may in fact cover all of your missing pay.

In addition, you probably have already gotten your “stimulus check” ($1,200 or more if you are a couple or family) and perhaps even a small business loan (or grant) if that is applicable. No matter what we think, the government at least has stepped up by financially helping over the past several weeks through the CARES Act legislation and there is even another financial proposal being considered as I write this newsletter that might help even more.

The saving money part comes in when you aren’t out and about spending money on all those small incidentals that you normally would. You know that’s true no matter how much you try and stick to your budget. No coffee and...on the way to work, saving money on your car’s gasoline, no drive by at McDonalds for a quick snack, no shopping at the mall, etc. Just one Friday night at home watching an old movie with your family can save you a fortune compared to a family night out at the movies. Wouldn’t it be cool if every once in a while doing family night at home became a real habit?

There are two points here to try to remember. The first is simple: Try to find a bright spot in what is a bad situation. If you are protecting yourself by staying at home and practicing social distancing when you must go out, at least try to stay positive and use the inside time to enjoy each other and do some of the things that you never got around to doing under normal hectic busy circumstances. Even if that is simply reading a book or doing some spring cleaning, use your time at home to accomplish something, anything you have neglected. Your relationships might even be at the top of your list.

The second is a matter of dollars and sense. Yes, you may have to spend some extra dollars getting groceries or other things delivered to your home right now, but you are probably ahead on all those incidentals you are not spending money on. My wife and I saved about $75 in gas this past month just because we weren’t driving around very much. You probably noticed things like that as well if you keep and track a budget (do you?).

That’s the kind of thing that makes a minus turn into a plus and you need to take that money and salt it away when you see it. That’s why I say you can actually save some money and soften the blow of the pandemic ever so slightly.

The Impace of Coronavirus on our Economy
The total number of coronavirus cases in the United States has now exceeded well over one million. The American death toll, over 60,000 now (that we know of), has surpassed that of the Vietnam War…in just 2 months. But today's post is not about the horrendous health impacts of the virus so far, but the economic impacts yet to come.

The bad news is that our economy was reported this week to have shrunk by nearly 5% in the first quarter, the worst performance since the recession of a decade ago and probably the forerunner of a much steeper collapse in the second quarter that could be the worst one since the Great Depression, 90 years ago!

But in spite of these things, the White House on Wednesday declared its response to the crisis “a great success story”.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time that someone (and I guess it’s going to

Celebrating Mother's Day in a COVID-19 World
As a former boss of mine once said to me (and I have regretfully repeated over the years), “Father’s Day is the most important day of the year”…not! Let’s get real here, your mom was, has been, and still is the very most important person ever. I’m not here to list all the reasons why and that is because you already know that without her, you just wouldn’t exist, so case closed. If you are fortunate enough to have your mom still around, it’s really important to recognize her. But how will you celebrate Mother’s Day in a COVID-19 world?

Some Things Still Haven’t Changed - Yet

Whether you’re staying at home or not (and you must social distance in order to protect yourself and everyone around you), you can still send your mom a heartfelt or funny greeting card and you can do it without ever leaving your house.

Even if and when you are being

Super Saving Tip of the Week:

Instead of “Let Me Entertain You”, why not entertain yourself...for free!

Why not build an ebook library right now! Reading is one way to fill the sudden rash of reclusive days and turn our minds away from the torrent of distressing news. But with libraries and bookstores closed and social distancing the edict, snapping up new titles is tricky. If you have just a smidgen of tech competency, getting books on an electronic device may be the way to go. You can even build an ebook library for yourself from your local library from the comfort of your chair so why not get started right now?

Is TV more your “thing”? What about television free trials? Escape the pandemic, but avoid overspending on subscription services and movie rentals like Hulu, CBS All Access, Sundance Now, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Showtime, and YouTube Premium because they all offer month-long free trials. Even STARZ, Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Now, Philo, Boomerang, and fuboTV will dole out a week of free streaming so this is a great time to try them and then cancel so you can see some hot shows and movies for free! Just make sure you cancel in time to avoid any fees.
