A huge
THANK YOU
to our tireless staff and volunteers
From MNC president Ian Demack

Well, COVID-19 has certainly presented some challenges for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre! We’re still providing Emergency Relief between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm Monday to
Friday, thanks to the efforts of some of our key people.

Thank you Marg McKenzie

First up, I’d like to thank Marg McKenzie for her invaluable work while acting in the role of Centre Coordinator. Although Marg has had to step down from the position now, her leadership was essential in keeping the MNC team functioning well. Even though Marg is not able to be at the Centre she’s still been busy reviewing our policies and procedures. The current downtime presents a great opportunity to ensure that all our documentation is up-
to-date and fit for purpose.

New team leader Nancy McMahon

With Marg stepping down, Nancy McMahon, our Volunteer Support Worker, has taken on the role of Team Leader at the Centre. Having people like Nancy on staff makes my job as President so much easier. Nancy does an excellent job coordinating our team of volunteers, who have helped keep us functioning during the shutdown.

Front desk and garden

I’d like to thank Paul and Chelsea, who have been staffing our front desk for the last month or so. Chelsea and Paul are Skilling Queensland students, and they have stepped in to run our Emergency Relief and answer the phones. Every time I’ve been into the Centre in recent weeks, they have been unfailingly helpful and cheerful.
I’d also like to thank Chris and Jenny, who keep our gardens looking so green. They’ve kept coming to the Centre and volunteering their time – the staff and Committee really value the work Jenny and Chris are doing for us. It makes a real difference to the presentation of the
Centre.

Last but not least!

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge two of our most loyal volunteers. Meryl has been coming in on the weekends to check on our supplies, and while she’s here she tends to our plants as well. Meryl is a gifted flower arranger, and she likes to leave a floral display when she leaves. As Nancy says, it’s her calling card. It certainly brightens up the Monday mornings for our staff and volunteers.
Yvonne loves cooking, and she still comes in and looks after the kitchen. I can certainly attest to the delicious meals she makes. Sitting down and bonding over a meal is one of the great social pleasures, and we’re all looking forward to the day when we can re-establish our community lunches, break bread together, and share the meals that Yvonne and her team creates.

Front door closed, but Centre 'open'

So, remember—while our front doors are closed for the safety of all, if you ring 5499 9345 or 0499 937 118, we can provide Emergency Relief and other assistance between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm, Monday to Friday. Wishing you and your families good health and safety during the weeks ahead.
– Ian Demack, MNC Committee
Please call 5499 9345 or 0499 937 118 to arrange pickup OUTSIDE THE CENTRE or to let us know you are self-isolating and need your relief package delivered to you. We are currently liaising with community members who have volunteered to deliver food packages, but please bear in mind that we may not be able to get your package to you immediately.
FREE BREAD is available in the freezer around the side of the building after hours as well as food in the little pantry at the front of the Centre.

PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE AND SHARE.
An emergency lifeline for the MNC committee
Recently the Committee faced the probability that meetings could not be held because of COVID-19 restrictions. This would have made it difficult to effectively manage the affairs of the Neighbourhood Centre.
However the Sunshine Coast Emergency Grant Scheme came to the rescue! The Council funded the purchase of a table-mounted microphone suitable for all-round sound collection within a distance of 6 metres from the unit.
The Committee now has conference/video meetings using this central microphone at MNC. Also housebound members in the area are able to call in on their phone or log in through the internet.

Business as usual at the Maleny Credit Union

MCU an essential service

Everyone is shutting around us – however MCU is seen as an essential service so we will stay open if we can. Our hours may be shortened over coming weeks and sometimes we may shut at lunches to allow our staff to get their break.
We want to assure our customers that our services will not change. If our doors are shut during office hours you will still get us on the phone. We are happy to advise our staff will stay employed during this entire time.
If our doors do need to shut we are all set up to work from home on our secured network. The day-to-day running of a financial institution does not stop just because our doors may shut.
Of course, we would not be able to do any in-branch banking such as over the counter deposits and withdrawals. However we are working with those customers that use our branch facilities to ensure they have something in place to meet their needs if this time arises.

New customers

Pleasing to us is that in the last 2 weeks we have had many new customers join MCU, which is very encouraging and definitely keeping our staff busy. Also our loans keep coming in and that is good news for local not-for-profit clubs and organisations. When a loan is approved and drawn we reward them with an amount between $50 to $250, and we are very pleased to tell you that MNC have received $4,100 from this program so far! Thank you to the locals who support us with their lending needs and then in turn ask us to support MNC.
We wish all our customers and our community the best at this time and we are here to serve you – please do not hesitate to call us 5499 8988 or email us at info@mcu.com.au

COVID-19 SERVICES AT MALENY IGA

If you are self-isolating, here are some options to consider.

• CLICK AND COLLECT
The IGA offers ‘Click and Collect’ shopping on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You can ring the IGA on 5494 2257, or CLICK ON THIS LINK
You will need a credit card to pay for your order.

• SAME DAY PICKUP
Depending on the number of orders received, the IGA is working to achieve same-day pickup. If you have friends or family who can assist you, they can collect your order from the rear loading dock on your behalf.
We also understand that the IGA is investigating a delivery service once a week.

• NO-ONE TO ASSIST?
If you don’t have anyone who can assist you, please contact the Neighbourhood Centre, and we’ll connect you with volunteers who can help.
–––––––––––––

For those not self-isolating, here are three simple ways to help the Centre:

1 Community Benefit Contribution (CBC)  at the IGA
If you shop at the IGA, quote CBC 43356 at the checkout. One cent in every dollar you spend goes to the MNC.

2 Donate to our IGA charity bin
2. When you’re shopping at the IGA, why not buy a couple of extra items to place in our white charity bin? Products like baked beans, pasta and pasta sauce, oatmeal and UHT milk go into our food packs, to help those who are struggling.

3 Food vouchers
Buy a food voucher at either the IGA or Woolworths, and donate it to the MNC. Vouchers are especially useful for those with restricted dietary requirements.

With your ongoing support, we’ll be able to assist our community during the difficult months ahead.

PRIORITY ASSIST FOR SENIORS
Woolworths has an online shopping service available. In addition, Woolworths offers Priority Assist for seniors, people with a disability, and those who are in self-isolation. REGISTER HERE

Volunteer of the month –
Linda Perry

Hi everyone, I’m the Support Worker for the Maleny Temporary Accommodation for Women and Children and have worked at MNC for approximately 2 years.
I retired to the Sunshine Coast with my partner from NSW in 2016 where I worked in Community Services managing mental health programs. We moved from an average block of land in suburbia to living on half an acre and I really enjoy the peace and quiet that comes with that after the hustle and bustle of Sydney.
I enjoy gardening, travel and sightseeing around the local area now that I have time. Maleny and the surrounding areas are so beautiful I wish we had moved here sooner.
My daughter had visited MNC and suggested that I volunteer here as she had found the staff and volunteers so friendly. So here I am!  Everyone made me feel very welcome when I first started. I’ve made some great friends and I can certainly recommend volunteering here.
