Waikanae Boating Club E-News
6th May 2020

Message to Members,

As we are looking at moving into level 2 next week (fingers crossed) the committee will be meeting via Zoom this week to finalise and discuss a contingency plan before next weeks announcement from the government. We will keep you updated with what we will have in place for the club and to keep you all safe.

Good news!! The Galley are doing takeaways in Level 3!
Friday's & Saturday's only at this stage. Menu below (vege option on request).

Please text Al to book a time slot 027-844-9207 to order your food. We have contactless Eftpos or you can pay online to The Galley 06-0730-0331231-00 (reference your name).

When you arrive to collect your food, Emma will keep an eye out for you, please maintain social distancing. We trialled this out last weekend and it went really well.

Thanks for your continued support, we can't wait to feed you again!
(Hopefully) as we move into level 2 next week, make sure if you are a boat owner and plan to go out on the water...

“Prep, Check, Know”…

Prep your boat
Make sure you have good fuel, a reliable engine, good electrics, effective bungs, free-moving steering linkages and a long list of other things.
Don’t leave this stuff to chance.

Check your gear
Make sure your lifejackets are in good nick.  (If you’re thinking of replacing them – watch out for future updates on the Coastguard’s New for Old lifejackets roadshow.  They’re coming to Kapiti in January.)
If you carry an EPIRB on your boat, test it.  (If you don’t know how, check with the supplier so that you don’t trigger it for real!)  If you carry flares, check their expiry dates.  If you have a hand-held VHF, make sure it works and the battery holds a charge.  These are just a few examples.

Know the rules
If you’re the skipper, you’re legally responsible for a number of things.  It’s your responsibility to ensure that your boat is carrying a lifejacket for every person on board.  The lifejackets have to be the right size, and fit for purpose.
Make sure you know the rules of the road on the water (and follow them).  We see a lot of people who don’t.
A VHF radio could save your life, and in an emergency anybody can use one.  At any other time, you must have a VHF radio certificate.  If you want to get one, contact someone from the WBC committee and ask about adding yourself to the list.

These are just some main points.  For more detail, check out the guidance (and especially the videos) at the Safer Boating page at http://saferboating.org.nz/
