New Edison School Design Takes Shape

Architects present design for new elementary school building

The vision of the new Edison Elementary School has come into focus. The design team of Mahlum Architects and Robertson Sherwood Architects has completed design development for the new building, reflecting input received from families, neighbors and other community members.

The 1926 school structure that will be replaced, thanks to the community’s support of the school bond measure, is the district’s oldest existing building. It is nestled into the neighborhood on a very small school property, a single city block.

Responsive to community input, the architects have created a school design to fit the neighborhood in scale and prioritize green space, and utilized traditional and northwestern design styles in the provided renderings of the new building.

The design and building renderings are being presented and community feedback is invited virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. Any comments on the presented school design are invited to be shared via an online form by Sunday, May 10.

After completion of the detailed design, construction documents and permitting, construction of the new building will begin in early 2021 to be completed by summer 2022. Edison will be located at the former Willard school site during construction.

The new school building will be a sustainable and efficient, high-quality learning environment and community asset now and for generations to come.

Contractor Chosen to Build New High School

Firm with local experience will serve as North Eugene CM/GC

Planning for the new North Eugene High School is underway. The construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) has been selected to coordinate planning and construction of the new building: Lease Crutcher Lewis (Lewis), a construction company with offices in Eugene, Portland and Seattle, founded in 1886.

Lewis’s numerous high-profile local projects have included PK Park, Lillis Business Complex, Erb Memorial Union and other buildings at the University of Oregon, the LCC Downtown Campus and Titan Court, the Center Building and other buildings at the Lane Community College main campus, and the EWEB operations building, as well as high schools and other buildings in the Portland and Seattle areas.

CM/GCs are brought on early in the design process so that the firm can work with the architects and the district to analyze building systems, provide cost estimates, develop construction schedules, plan for construction, and help ensure that the school replacement projects will be completed on time and within budget.

The district, architect team, and construction firm will work as a team throughout the design and construction process of the new high school. Subcontractors will be selected through a publicly advertised, competitive solicitation process.

Willard Swing School Taking Shape

New space for elementary schools to open this fall

A new space to house elementary schools during construction and then serve other needs is under construction at the former Willard school site at 29th & Lincoln.

When complete, the swing school will have 13 classrooms, office spaces, library, kitchen, cafeteria, and gymnasium, composed of 37 prefabricated building segments and the former Willard school's renovated gym, along with a new playground.

Modern Building Systems is contracted to erect the pre-fabricated building with Hyland Construction supervising the site work. After site preparations this winter, the modular construction began in mid-April and is coming together quickly.

Thanks to the community’s approval of the 2018 school bond measure, new school buildings are being designed and built to replace the aging Edison and Camas Ridge Elementary School facilities. With limited space at the school sites, the existing buildings will need to be cleared before construction can begin, and no other school building in the area has the capacity to temporarily house the school programs.

The Willard swing school facility is being constructed to serve that need and will be repurposed for other district needs after its use as a swing school.

Edison Elementary School will move this summer from its 94-year-old building at 22nd & Onyx to the Willard facility, and will be housed there for two years, while the new Edison building is constructed. Camas Ridge will then move to the Willard site from summer 2022 to 2024, while its new building is constructed at 29th & Harris.
