MED Urban Transports Community - Newsletter #13

Edited by Urban Transports Community, an Interreg MED Programme initiative

Dear <<Name>> <<Surname>>,

The Urban Transports Community is deeply concerned about the current emergency and we hope that the recovery plans will be effective and based on sustainability, especially for the transportation sector which is key for returning to normal activities and preventing a further spread of the pandemics.

In these troubled times it is crucial to keep exchanging knowledge amongst experts, practitioners and decision makers as much as possible, and for this we share with you some articles, analysis and webinars.

We would very much like to hear from you and for this we have prepared an anonymous single question survey here

Let’s keep in touch

WEBINARS

Mobility, energy and climate change // Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change, 18 May, 11:00 – 12:30

Most people would agree that mobility, energy and climate change are strictly connected. But very often the policies and actions targeting these issues are managed and implemented by different departments of the city administration without any coordination.

The past Horizon 2020 project SIMPLA developed a methodology for the harmonization of SUMPs and SECAPs entailing strong political commitment, interdisciplinary teams, sharing of data and stakeholders involvement.

This methodology and how it has been implemented by the cities of Pavia (italy) and Monzon (Spain) is going to be presented by the Covenant of Mayors Webinar: Reducing emissions from transport - Harmonisation of energy and sustainable urban mobility planning planned on May 18th, 11:00 – 12:30.

COVID-19: Keeping Things Moving // by POLIS Network

As the Covid-19 pandemic unfolds, local authorities are stepping forward into the frontlines. This crisis is being tackled in our hospitals, but also in our streets and plazas, on our buses, trains and subways. At Polis we want to help cities and regions navigate these difficult times. In this section of our website, we will collect examples of how local authorities are keeping things moving despite the Covid-19 crisis. We are showcasing both cities' and regions' responses during confinement measures and plans for after confinement measures have been lifted.

For an overview of useful resources, such as reports, tools and analyses, head to our page 'Useful resources on Covid-19 and mobility'.

For more information on Polis's response to COVID-19, please see our calls for support and recognition for the transport sector during the virus outbreak.

Italian cities announce plans to maintain reduced car use after lock-down // by Eltis

[EN] Italian cities are looking to capitalise on the reduced car use resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak by taking action to improve mobility and ensure public safety. The north of Italy is one of Europe’s most polluted areas and has also been notably hard hit by the Covid-19 outbreak. Due to the nationwide lockdown, car travel has dropped by 30-75%, which has also resulted in a large drop in air pollution. Now, as cities consider easing their lockdown measures, officials are seeking to prevent a significant increase in private motorised traffic and air pollution. In this context, there is a recognition that public transport could struggle as requirements to maintain social distancing need to be followed and people are likely to be wary of sharing enclosed spaces.
