"A Salute to All Who Mothered Us"

Mothering is often hard work. Pastor Rick takes a look at mothering in this message. Using 1 John 4:7-12, 16b-21, he explores the source of love and what love entails.

You are invited to remember all those who have “mothered” you along your journey. Pastor Rick suggests that many people mother us when they teach us, challenge us, encourage us, nurture us, and love us.

“God is love,” scripture declares. Love is unconditional, unearned, and undeserved. Love frees us from fear. Have some fun celebrating love, as you remember and honor those who have mothered and loved you.

Take a minute to comment below about one person, in addition to your mother, who "mothered" you along your journey. Who was it? What difference did she (or he) make in your life?

Listed below are links to music and skits that fit this theme. I hope they enhance your worship and celebration of Mother's Day.

Notice that some are a bit unusual for traditional worship settings. Jesus was a master at finding the sacred in the midst of the secular. So should we. Also, note that several of the suggestions are humorous and lighthearted.

“Mothering God, You Gave Me Birth”, by 1st Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, Alabama. In traditional hymn style, this song celebrates the mothering expressions of God, Christ, and the Spirit. 2 minutes.

"The Mother's Day Song" by Bryant Oden. It tells the whole story of all the ways the kids try to honor mom on Mother's Day by getting up at 5 a.m. and doing all her normal jobs. The chorus reminds mom to "Remember no one's perfect. Every kid has faults. Remember it's the thought that counts, more than the results." Smile and enjoy it. 3:11 minutes.
