Friends,

The coronavirus pandemic has revealed countless fissures in the formidable system of capitalism that we have so long lived under. In one of the most recent events we helped sponsor, we learned from Dan Kovalik (longtime researcher of the effects of imperialism) that while Cuba sends doctors to 31 different countries and provides a drug known to help against the virus to places in need, America is ramping up sanctions against Cuba and 38 other countries.

The injustice of placing sanctions on so many countries during a pandemic should not be ignored. Join us in holding those in power accountable for their actions. This newsletter includes some relevant action items, as well as other opportunities to fight for a more just world with or without a pandemic. Some special-mention items include:
  • Support our resolution and medical aid fundraiser with Whatcom DSA (find the link here)
  • Learn from WWU SUPER's Virtual Israeli Apartheid Week this week
  • Join our Online meeting tomorrow to follow up Dan Kovalik's talk—we will be discussing how to expand a network of peace and social justice organizations in the PNW. If you missed the first meeting and would like to be connected with this network, please contact WPJC at office@whatcompjc.org.
We'd love for you to join in on any or all of these events. Hope to "see" you there!

In peace and solidarity,

Marii Herlinger
WPJC Intern

"From warfare to healthcare"—add your name to the plea for a global ceasefire!

The original Mother’s Day proclamation, written by Julia Ward Howe in 1872, said: “From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: Disarm, disarm!”

Join UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his plea to work on rebuilding health systems and combating the Coronavirus. The last thing we need during this time is an increase in bombs, warplanes and military action. Let us raise our voices against violence and militarization so that we may collectively focus our efforts on the fight against COVID-19.

Additional actions you can take:

  • Sign the Open Letter to oppose the false charges being made against Venezuelan officials.
  • Share a photo of yourself holding a sign opposing the war on Venezuela and use the hashtag #FightCovidNotVenezuela.
  • Start making plans now for the May 25 to 31 Global Week of Actions against sanctions and imperialism. Learn more at AntiImperialist.org

Whatcom PJC teamed up with  WWU Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights to create an emergency fundraiser in solidarity with the Palestinian American Medical Association (PAMA), an organization working to promote health care in Palestine. With closed borders and Israel currently denying medical care to Palestinians, the threat of coronavirus is severely heightened. Click here to find the fundraiser as well as more ways to take action.

Sign the petition to end fighter jet flyovers!

Claiming to “honor” and thank medical professionals treating COVID-19 patients, to “show resolve” to a weary nation suffering amidst a horrific pandemic, these flyovers come at a high price. Low-end estimates are that each hour costs $60,000, with a total cost in the millions. That’s millions of dollars that could be spent on economic relief and personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilators, and other critically needed medical supplies.

Last week it was Washington, DC, this week more flyovers are planned across Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis. In addition to wasting resources, these stunt shows can be triggering for those across the country whose muscles hold the memories of war.

Click here to demand Secretary of Defense Mark Esper immediately stop fighter jet flyovers and redirect the money planned for these shows to life-saving medical equipment and economic relief.

Help call on Congress to ensure a socially responsible recovery plan for COVID-19

As an organization, Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility fights to prevent the gravest threats to human health—threats for which prevention is the only cure. As health professionals, it's our duty to fight for a socially responsible relief and recovery from COVID-19. This petition, to be delivered to the WA Congressional Delegation and members of the State House and Senate, aims to ensure an equitable response and recovery to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that policy makers protect the most vulnerable. We aim to gather signatures from 1,000 WA state health professionals. Please visit this site to help amplify the demands and voices of health and medical professionals during this critical time.

Zoom Rally for Nakba Day—reserve your spot!

Nakba translates to catastrophe in Arabic, and refers to the destruction of hundreds of Palestinian villages and the violent expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians that began with Israel's establishment. The land theft and expulsion that characterized Israel's founding continue to this day. We are just weeks away from the likely threat of annexation, which would mean even more deeply entrenched apartheid, more home and village demolitions, and the further loss of Palestinian land, livelihoods, and connections.

We refuse to be a part of this plan. As we organize with our partners to pressure governments, diplomats, and NGOs to use their power to stop annexation, we must also help build a stronger global movement. On Nakba Day, we will take another step toward this.

Hosted by Jewish Voice for Peace, this rally will be held on May 15 at 11:00 a.m. PDT.
Join us using this link—hope to see you there!

In loving memory...

WPJC would like to honor Patrick Dukes, a longtime peace vigiler and friend, who passed away peacefully in his home. He will be very much missed.
