Working Together to Stop the Pipeline and the Northern Corridor Highway
We need your energy and a little of your time
by Martha Ham, CSU's New Volunteer Outreach Coordinator

The coronavirus pandemic reminds us that when we act together, we can change a threatening situation. We have seen how social distancing and sheltering in place have been adopted almost overnight throughout the country.

I believe that the Lake Powell Pipeline (LPP) and Northern Corridor Highway (NCH) are also threatening situations for Washington County. If we are going to defeat them, we must act together. . . . . and soon.

We have a dedicated corps of citizens who commented on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for the LPP and the NCH in December/January. But we need thousands more. How do we identify those people and fast?  I know they are out there. I meet people all the time who say they are opposed to the LPP or NCH. And in most cases, they haven't written a comment to an agency or talked to a legislator. I think most would if they knew what to do and when. They need our help!

So, here is the ASK:

The Get Your 3 Campaign

The Environmental Impact Statements will be released in early June. We need to act now to enlist as many people as we can in the effort to stop these projects.

Will you reach out to neighbors, family members, friends, co-workers who you know oppose or need to know more about
the LPP/NCH? Ask if they would be willing to receive alerts via email or text about when to comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statements.

That’s it! Not so hard. Get your 3!

Once you get those 3 contacts (email, mobile number, mailing address), please email them to me at martha.ham@conserveswu.org so I can welcome them to CSU and get their information in the data base.

This isn't a fund-raising campaign. It is a campaign to enlist more supporters who will take action to oppose one or both proposals: the LPP and the NCH.

One of my least favorite feelings is regret. I hate feeling regretful. (Picture my redheaded self, stamping my feet right now).

Research has shown that high numbers of comments on a public project do not go unnoticed by decision makers. Let’s help folks avoid regretting that they didn’t voice their opposition.

What we are asking for will not take much time, and you might even enjoy the social moment of reaching out to that person. We are encouraging a social convergence!

I am newly retired as a mental health professional here in St. George. I miss the connections I made with my clients and the fulfillment of helping, although I think they helped me every bit as much as I helped them. Volunteering for Conserve Southwest Utah is just the right transition for me. I want to meet you, and I want to work together to defeat the LPP and NCH. Get your 3!
