The Shilo MFRC will be delivering programs virtually until further notice. We hope you are able to take advantage of some of these programs and "get out" with us while we are apart! We are here for you, so please reach out if you need to talk to someone (counsellor information is below) or if you have an activity idea we may be able to implement!

Counselling Services
We know how resilient you are as a community and how well you support one another, but we all need a little extra help sometimes. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our counsellors for support and guidance. And we are thrilled to announce the counsellors are now available via virtual counselling, as well as email and phone contact! Virtual counselling is face-to-face contact over the computer and allows for set appointment times that are convenient for you.

Care for the Caregiver (virtual)
If you are caring for someone undergoing mental health challenges, whether it be your spouse, child, parent, or friend, this presentation is for you. Care for the Caregiver is a program created by The Canadian Mental Health Association, MFS and many other significant mental health partners to share information to support caregivers.
You will learn:
  • new coping strategies
  • the importance of self care and how to accommodate your needs while caregiving
  • develop your self awareness tools
  • review care-giving responsibilities and discuss challenges
  • review local resources that will help you along the way

One-on-One Self Care Workshops
Available to ALL community members - Available upon request 
If you are struggling to work self care into your new schedule, or would just like some tips and tricks, you can book an appointment for one-on-one support and planning with the VFPC. After reviewing some self care strategies and exploring what self care looks like for you, you will be able to complete your very own self care plan. Self care is so important for fostering resilience and managing stress.

Release Support
Are you releasing or thinking about releasing from the Military? Book a virtual appointment with the VFPC to review the steps involved in the process, start planning, and obtain important information to support you in your transition. There are many benefits and programs available to you and your family, even after you release.

Massage That Stress Away
Have you noticed that your body is reacting to all the added stress these days? Learn how stress affects your muscles; how your body hangs on to it and how to let it go. Amber, a licensed remedial massage therapist, will teach you some easy massage techniques to alleviate those muscle tensions. Whether you have a partner around that can massage or by using a tennis ball/foam roller to reach those pressure points, she will discuss tips on how to massage that stress away!

Walk through exploring careers, employment and education. As well, learn how develop your personalized My Plan tool to track all your career exploration and planning activities.

The Shilo Military Family Resource Centre is now accepting applications for:
Prevention, Support and Intervention Coordinator

This is full-time (37.5 hrs/week) position under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.
This position is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, evaluation and direct service delivery of psychosocial, mental health, and wellness services to military families. This includes initial and continued contact with families, screening/assessment and referrals; short term counselling (8-10 sessions); group work and program development and facilitation. Visit our

Grub Clubs
Every Tuesday at noon we will be posting a cooking video on our Facebook pages! Videos will be left up so people may access at their own pace. Feel free to share pictures of your creations in the video comments!
 
Mini Pancake Bites – June 2
Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 Tbsp oil
  • Blueberries, raspberries, mini chocolate chips or melted butter and cinnamon sugar (optional)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)
  • Cooking spray 
Supplies:
  • Whisk
  • Two mixing bowls
  • Mini muffin tin (or large pancakes will just need to cook longer!)
  • Butter knife
  • Oven mitts

5 minute Mac and Cheese – June 8
Ingredients
  • 6 cups cooked pasta we used small shells
  • 2 cups Mild shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Supplies
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • Spoon
  • Plastic wrap
  • Oven mitts (in case its too hot)

Super Smoothies – June 16
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 cups frozen strawberries 
  • 1 banana fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup milk or almond milk
Supplies:
  • Blender
  • Spoon
  • cup

Mini Corn Dogs – June 23
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 5-6 hot dogs, cut into 1" pieces

The Shilo MFRC Preschool Programs will continue to be offered virtually for the time being! We will be offering some registered programs that will be available through a free app called ZOOM. You must have access to internet and a computer/tablet/phone that supports the app. Once you are registered, you will be emailed a meeting code to access the program, as well as a list of items to have ready for our session! We hope to see you all there!

Storytimes
Back by popular demand! We will be pre-recording a story reading and posting it on Facebook during the weekend.  Families can then listen in to the story whenever they have time! Watch our Facebook page for these sessions!

These will be pre-recorded so that you can do this activity with your children at home, at your own pace! Watch our Facebook page for some fun crafting ideas!

Circle Times
Join us at Circle Time! During our time together, we will have a sing-a-long, movement activity,  science activity & end with a favorite story!
*these sessions will be offered virtually via ZOOM & are FREE but do require pre-registration in order for you to get the access code & supply list for each session. There will be a max of 8 families per session - multiple children in the same home can join together.
