Principal's News

Many Blessings
Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for the efforts of Mrs. Bundy, Ms. Weber, & Mrs. Harper during my years here at St. John School. SJS has thrived because of the wonderful servant leadership these three exceptional teachers have exhibited for so many years. The entire school community has been blessed beyond measure for their counsel and contributions during their many years as SJS educators. Please join me in wishing them many safe, healthy and memorable years of retirement.
Mrs. Hare has graciously agreed to teach 2nd grade next year while Monica House completes her degree and earns her teaching license. Mrs. Hare will teach the first semester and Mrs. House will teach the second. So, please join me in thanking Mrs. Hare and welcoming Mrs. House. Perhaps Mrs. House will serve as many years as Ms. Weber?
I have posted a search for the next Mrs. Harper and will let you know when that teacher is hired.

Masses Begin...
... again in time to celebrate Pentecost. The regular schedule of Masses will begin on Saturday, May 30.

Spring Fling
The PTO is hosting a Spring Fling committee Zoom meeting to determine the logistics of the event on Wednesday, May 27 @ 5:30pm. If you'd like to attend the meeting please contact Amy White and she will make sure you get a Zoom invitation.

Summer School
Summer school will take place this year from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 31. Mrs. Bussan & Mrs. Yearous (our new 5th grade teacher) will host the math class, while Ms. Loyd and Mrs. Grover will host the reading class. The cost for one program is $100 or $150 if your child is attending both. If you have multiple children attending please contact me at school so we can discuss further cost reduction. Payment is expected on the first day of summer school. All participants must wear a mask. If you do not have one, one will be provided. The Indee Food Pantry is distributing masks free of charge. You can contact them at 319-334-2451

Summer Reading
Again this summer, if your child is entering grades 2 through 8, he/she will be required to read. If they are an incoming 2nd through 4th grader, the student will be required to read two books. If they are entering 5th through 8th grade, they are required to read three books. Reading will be verified through the Reading Counts program. If the book does not exist in the Reading Counts library please contact your child's teacher for approval. I will be here Monday through Friday each day, from 8am - 2pm; exceptions can be made by contacting me. I will be available to your students so they can return and check out books as well as take the Reading Counts tests. Most of the books on the list are available in our Public library. Those students who read seven books or more will be invited to breakfast, hosted by the principal.

Yearbook
Mrs. Hare will again be creating our yearbook this year. They will go on sale for $12 and be ready for pick up in June. Mrs. Hare is requesting any pictures that you'd like posted in this year's edition be sent directly to her at hareh@sjs.pvt.k12.ia.us by Friday, May 15. You can pay for your yearbook(s) when you pick them up.
