Enhancing the health and well-being of Barrington area children and youth
in mind, body and spirit.
May 19, 2020

As the doors to the world soon begin to re-open, be sure to join us on Thursday from 1:00 - 1:30 on Zoom as we talk about how to manage emotions, establish new rules and expectations, and create a "new normal" for our families.  Read on for lots of other great information!

Here are a few Try This tips for the week:

  • During these stressful times, we can easily be overwhelmed by emotions. Tempers run high, frustration is easy to come by, even little things can throw us (and our children) over the edge.  When you're feeling this way, it's important to take a meta-moment - a pause for a deep breath (or 3 or 4 or 10 if you need it), a quick walk, whatever you need to find a moment to stop the action, reflect on your emotions, and develop a response that is in line with your best self.  Be sure to teach and model the meta-moment for your children so they too can learn this skill critical to emotional regulation.
  • Look for opportunities to catch your children doing something positive.  Use Post-It notes to create a family Good News wall or put them on the fridge, their bathroom mirror, or their bedroom door.  Be sure to be specific about what you liked about their choices and behavior so that they can repeat it.  For some great phrases to get you started, check out Catch Them Doing It Right from The Parent Cue. Make it a family affair!  Ask everyone to join in the Good News celebration, looking for kindness and positivity in each other.
  • Check out the final episode of John Krasinski's Some Good News Community Edition to celebrate that there is always good in the world.
If you have topics or questions that you would like us to address in our Tuesday Tips, Tools & Try This emails, please email them to Kyle Kick.  We want to hear from you!
