To Our Beloved Residents and Staff

Taking It Easy

While these days we may not feel like we have a lot of appealing choices, we do have one very promising option before us. We can choose to take it easy on ourselves during this time, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time, one moment at a time.

We never have to live in any moment other than the one we are in right now.

In fact, it is downright impossible to live in any moment other than the one we are in right now.

Unless you are able to time travel- perhaps you are
Marty McFly  or "Doc" Brown from the popular 1980's Hollywood series, "Back to the Future," and therefore you hold the key to this secret?  If you are able to time travel, please let us all know how you accomplished this!

A little humor for us :)

Since, for the moment, it appears we cannot turbo blast into the future in a "DeLorean Time Machine," let's stick with this moment that we are in right now.

Let’s settle into it, breathe, and take it easy, one day at a time...

“When we talk of tomorrow,” says a Chinese proverb, “the gods laugh.”  Perhaps they laugh, not because they find us ridiculous, but because they know the future is not predictable. Thus we have no choice but to live “one day at a time.”

We can make plans, but we cannot determine the results. No amount of scheming about next week can control what will happen then. Circumstances will be different, and we ourselves will be different as well.

We can further compress the focus of living “one day at a time” to living one hour at a time, or even one minute at a time. In such small increments, life begins to feel not only bearable, but precious. At any given moment, no matter what is going on, if we concentrate on being right here, right now, we know that we are doing just fine.

Today’s reminder:

My worst fears about tomorrow need not affect this day. By letting them go, I am free to grow. What unhealthy habit can I change today? What fear can I face? What joy can I acknowledge? What good fortune, no matter how modest, can I celebrate?  All I have is today. Let me make today the most fully alive day I have ever experienced.

“Do not be anxious about tomorrow; tomorrow will look after itself.”                                                                                                              The Bible

~ Reading adapted from “Courage to Change: One Day at a Time in Al-Anon”

When we focus on being present in the moment, living one day at a time, "life begins to feel not only bearable but precious." When I "acknowledge my joys," when I count my blessings,  I cherish all of you highly among them.  I am grateful for the precious time we have been given here together.

Thank you for being wonderful you. May your moments be precious to you. You are worth enjoying and experiencing peace in this moment. Know that you are accepted, loved, and precious in this world, right here, right now.

~

May your hearts be anchored in all that gives you strength and hope; may they be eased in gentle healing peace, and filled to overflowing with love, light, and laughter.

With love and prayers,
Chaplain Caitilin Hoy

Encouragement From Around the Neighborhood:

Love Spreads Strength

When I graduated high school a church friend of mine gifted me this rock. He said it was a reminder through my days in college and beyond that I can always find strength in love. I have kept it by my bed or in my bookbag everywhere I go since then. Throughout the last 15 or so years it has really come in handy in difficult times to just hold and reflect.

Love spreads Strength.

That is what this gift has taught me. During difficult times like these I wanted to urge everyone to find strength in love from their friends and family.

I once read a book by John Gordon titled "The Carpenter," and the message in this book was to approach each day with these three pillars:
Love, Serve, and Care.

Love what you do each day,
Serve others through Love of what you do,
and give Care to all who you are inspired to care for.

Take care, everyone.
