Sustainability Summit 2020
Thank you to everyone who attended our annual Sustainability Summit, which was held virtually for the first time on Friday, May 29. If you were not able to watch the livestream in full or were not able to attend, you can watch the recording of the summit here.
Exciting announcements included the formation of a new Environmental Sustainability Student Coalition, and a gold rating on the new report in STARS, or the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System. In addition, we had nine (!) incredible award winners!

Tempestry Project
Earlier this year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day virtually with our Earth Month website and events, When you have time this summer, check out the virtual UC Davis Tempestry Project gallery, a textile exhibit created by volunteers showing the highest daily temperatures in Davis over the last 50 years.Thank you to everyone who helped make this project happen!

Green Workplace Program
Want to see how green your lab or office can be? The Office of Sustainability officially launched its new Green Workplace Program at the Summit in May. Congratulations to the pilot workplaces who certified under the new program: the Slupsky Lab, with a Silver certification, and the Tahoe Environmental Research Center, with a Gold certification. The Office of Sustainability is posting openings for multiple part-time, paid student positions and fellowships as follows. Please look on the campus student job site, Handshake, for these positions using the related Job ID numbers below.
- Carbon Neutrality Initiative Fellow (Handshake Job #3811855) - Seeking several students for the Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CNI) Fellowship. Students must have a strong interest in climate change and carbon neutrality. This is a one-year paid fellowship working to promote and support the goals of CNI. Starts during the academic year with orientation in July 2020. Deadline to apply is June 24 by noon.
- Campus Greenhouse Gas Inventory Data Analyst (Handshake Job #3811864) - Seeking one student to manage the UC Davis greenhouse gas inventory. Get an up-close look at the full picture of UC Davis GHG emissions, and build the Davis campus nitrogen footprint. This work involves extensive data collection and management, in close coordination with other campus stakeholders. Starts ASAP. Deadline to apply is July 1 by 5pm.
- Green Workplace Coordinator (Handshake Job #3811170) - Seeking one student to support and maintain the UC Davis Green Workplace program and help enroll labs and offices in the program to green their operations. This position involves outreach, professional correspondence and interactions, and creativity in engaging the campus community. Starts ASAP. Deadline to apply is July 1 by 5pm.

California Native Garden Foundation Internship Opportunities - Summer 2020
The California Native Garden Foundation (CNGF) is looking for student interns that are interested in helping the CNGF put together an array of pilot programs through its partnership with San Jose City College.This summer, in addition to usual activities, CNGF is building curriculum for new certification and degree programs in ecological fields.
There will be opportunities for hands-on learning at the gardens and urban Regenerative Organic Agriculture (ROA) farm while maintaining physical distancing, as well as online internships for students who live further, or are unable to meet in person. To learn more, contact CGNF or apply here.

LEED Green Associate (GA) Live Webinar Training - June 6 - September 12
Train to become a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Associate this summer. This training course is instructed by a US Green Building Council (USGBC) Faculty member and is designed to help you pass the LEED Green Associate exam. (Note: the USGBC charges a $100 (reduced for students) fee for the actual exam that is not included with this training.)

Freezer Challenge - extended to August 1
Does your campus laboratory have a freezer? Join the Freezer Challenge, now through August 1st! Improve your cold storage management through best practices, keep your samples safe from fires and freezer failures, and save energy, space, and costs! Top earning UC Davis lab wins $500 and all participating labs will be entered into a raffle (must be registered at freezerchallenge.org under UC Davis and complete a minimum of 2 actions on their scorecard to be eligible). Start by calculating your environmental impact with this CoolCalifornia carbon calculator.
And consider these green tips for summer:
- avoid doing laundry during the day; use cold water and hang-dry when possible
- challenge yourself to take shorter showers
- bike and walk when possible instead of driving
- compost (avoid odors by freezing it until pickup day)
- propagate plants
- check for drafty windows and doors
- second-hand shop before opting for fast fashion
- learn to mend your own clothes
