An anatomy of a Facebook manager offer

Today I’m going to share with you the breakdown of a recent Facebook manager offer.(Disclaimer: I have changed the data slightly to protect confidentiality but both the numbers and structure of the compensation reflect the current reality of Facebook offers.)

  • Job title: Engineering Manager

  • Facebook internal Job level: M1

  • Year of experience: 14 years

  • Base salary: $250,000

  • Annual performance bonus: 20%

  • Sign-on bonus: $100,000

  • Equity: $1,200,000

  • Vesting (year 1 - 4): 25%, 25%, 25%, 25%

Total compensation

  • Year 1: $700,000

  • Year 2: $600,000

  • Year 3: $600,000

  • Year 4: $600,000

Observations:

This is an excellent offer for an engineering manager. The total first year compensation is $700K including one-time sign-on bonus. For the subsequent years, this person will earn an average of $600,000 assuming no stock price appreciation. Facebook is still smaller than Amazon and Google, and it could have higher potential for stock price appreciation.

At the same time, with this amount of total compensation, it also comes with high expectation and work related stress. Facebook is not an easy environment. It has a challenging performance review process that gets rid of low performers. As Facebook gets larger, more and more corporate politics starts to show up. Being a manager at Facebook requires a high level of emotional agility, political skills in addition to technical acumen in order to succeed. The higher you go at Facebook, the more critical your emotional intelligence and soft skills become.

3 actions you should take now during COVID-19 shelter-in-place

Working from home is hard. There isn't clear boundary between work and personal life. Video conferencing fatigue is exhausting. The lack of social interaction can be isolating. The fear of recession and COVID-19 health risk only adds to our stress level. However, great companies and great careers are built during crisis time. Without your daily commute, you might even have 1-2 extra hours each day. It's time for you to focus on 3 things in addition to work:

  • Exercise regularly. Sitting is the new smoking. No excuse not to exercise. As a starter, commit yourself to 20 minutes of HIIT and body weight exercise everyday. Download the 7-minute workout app and do 3 sets of the 7-minute exercises for a total of 21 minutes.
  • Start a side hustle and commit to generate $3K in side income in the next 90 days. Layoff could happen any time to anybody. It's not safe to rely on a single source of income from an employer. You need diversify your income. Take action now before it's too late. You will thank me for this advice.
  • Invest in yourself. Each year You might spend thousands of dollars on your children's after school programs or buying nice clothes or traveling to fancy places, but you need to invest some of your hard-earned dollars on the most important thing in your life --  yourself. Develop new skills, work on your weaknesses, and expand your horizon. You'll be much better positioned to move up post COVID-19.

A quote I'm pondering

“Ultimately, there’s one investment that supersedes all others: Invest in yourself. Nobody can take away what you’ve got in yourself, and everybody has potential they haven’t used yet.”
-- Warren Buffett
