Welcome to Wiser Now’s weekly email blast which reflects my eclectic interests and, I hope, yours. This week, my focus is on photography, specifically optical illusions in nature photos. The inspiration is Photo Month and Gifts from the Garden Month. The picture at left is by Indonesian photographer Tustel Ico  whose amazing shot of a praying mantis on two sprouting ferns makes it look like the insect is riding a bike.

I hope you are finding these offerings fun, and perhaps even useful, and I welcome your feedback. (Kathy@WiserNow.com) And if you haven’t yet pressed the subscribe button so this newsletter doesn’t go to spam, please do so now.

The Quirky Quote

“The two most engaging powers of a photograph are to make new things familiar and familiar things new.”  ~ William Thackeray

What looks a lot like a fuzzy, spiny caterpillar in this cropped photo is really a group of European Bee-eaters on a branch by photographer José Luis Rodríguez.

The Quirky Combo: Observation + Question

Many of us have been creative optical illusion photographers when we were unable to resist the temptation to set up a picture that looked like we were single-handedly propping up the Leaning Tower of Pisa or holding the Eiffel Tower in the palm of our hand. Here’s a boy filling a cup from a waterfall. Have you ever done something like this? If so, I’d love to hear about it, or have you share the picture. Write me at Kathy@WiserNow.com.

The Quirky Fact
According to this article, funny cat photos have been around since the 1870s when Harry Pointer took a photo of his cat and started it all.

Quirky Fact 2
Last month I wrote about how I am drawn to both the beauty of nature and the artists, specifically Wolf Kahn, who create their own version of what they see. But sometimes photographs look like paintings. The photo at left was taken at the Deadvlei claypan inside Namib-Naukluft National Park, where the long-dead camel thorn trees at nearly sunset create a striking image. (Photographer unknown.)

The Quiz - Caption the Photos

There are no right answers to this quiz, but it’s a great brain booster, because whenever you use your imagination, you are making new connections in your brain and growing new dendrites. Here’s the challenge: Can you come up with funny captions for the following six photographs? Share your answers with others or try it with someone for better brainstorming. And I’d love to know your answers, too. Kathy@WiserNow.com. (Photo credits at the end of the document.)

Please share Wiser Now Wednesday with anyone you think might be interested, and if you represent an organization that would like a customized version, please send me a note at Kathy@WiserNow.com.
