Thursday 21 May, Issue 7
Good morning,

Following feedback from our VCSE meeting in April, we're hosting our next Voluntary Sector Forum on 16 June to discuss and explore collaborative working. We're also moving our quarterly Volunteer Management Forum online. We'll be meeting next week (26 May) to discuss and share best practice regarding 'mobilising and managing volunteers in a pandemic'. We hope to see as many organisations at these meetings as possible so please book online using the details below.

Responding to requests from the sector, we have published a range of guides and links on our website. The link to guidance produced by Tower Hamlets Volunteer Centre (featured below) on what roles need DBS checks is particularly useful at this time. If there is any guidance that you feel is missing, or your organisation needs support, please do continue to get in touch by emailing: jane.granville@yorkcvs.org.uk.

Chocolate and philanthropy - carrying on a local tradition
Continuing the city’s long standing tradition of chocolate and philanthropy, York Cocoa Works kindly donated 50 boxes of chocolate treats to York CVS, as a thank you for our hard-working volunteers who have spent the last 8 weeks taking and making hundreds of phone calls to vulnerable people, and people in crisis during the pandemic.

Due to the generosity of York Cocoa Works, we were able to deliver 20 boxes to The Supper Collective; a collective of local independent restaurants, cafes and bakeries, safely delivering free nutritious meals for the vulnerable, isolated, NHS and the homeless across the city. We're glad that we were able to give a little something back to The Supper Collective because they have and continue to provide vital support to people referred to them by our Welfare Calls Team.

Free online training to make York a Suicide Safer Community

One of the greatest challenges we face in preventing suicide is stigma and lack of understanding. Andy Chapman, City of York Council’s (CYC) Suicide Prevention Officer, is leading on work to make York a Suicide Safer Community. This is a concept devised by The Living Works Foundation Canada, which promotes a whole community approach to prevention through training, closer partnership working and more open, informed and supportive conversations about suicide.

Face to face training is not currently available due to the current situation however, a great introduction to suicide prevention training is the free online package from the Zero Suicide Alliance. This training features in the regional Humber, Coast and Vale ‘Talk Suicide’ Campaign which is encouraging as many people as possible to take the training.
