Community Development

FEMA CRS Program Recertification

The City recently completed its recertification for the FEMA Community Rating System (CRS) program. The CRS program credits community efforts beyond those minimum standards by reducing flood insurance premiums for the community’s property owners. For CRS participating communities, flood insurance premium rates are discounted in increments of 5%. Most communities maintain an 8 or a 9, and though the City has certain challenges when it comes to flooding, the City has been able to maintain an 8 which allows homeowners in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) to receive a 10% discount on flood insurance. For more information on flood zones visit the Brevard County Flood Map or the City’s Flood Protection webpage for additional resources.

There’s an app for that!

At the end of 2019, the City launched the Cape Connect Portal; a new service request portal that routes concerns or service requests (park issues, code enforcement, etc.) to appropriate Staff members directly. This week, the portal was made available for download on Android or Apple devices. Once downloaded, users can create an account to track their requests, or submit requests anonymously. To check out the portal, visit your device’s app store and search “Cape Connect Portal” to download the app, or visit the desktop Cape Connect Portal using your computer’s browser.

Culture + Community Affairs

  • The 21st Annual (Virtual) Student Art Show will only be open until May 30! You can tour the four virtual 3-D exhibition galleries from anywhere in the world! Use this link to share our students' talent with friends and family near and far!
  • Hurricane Season is right around the corner! Be sure you are signed up for local emergency alerts to stay in the loop with need-to-know information for Cape Canaveral residents! Text 32920 to 888777 to sign up or log on to Everbridge. It's FREE to sign up, although your carrier's text message rates may still apply!
  • Wednesday, May 27 will be another historical launch! That means an influx of visitors will be headed to the Space Coast. We are working in coordination with the Brevard County Emergency Management team and other local municipalities to assist with the management of launch visitors + the anticipated increase in traffic to our community.
  • Visitors are encouraged to utilize the traffic app Waze to find available parking and improve the flow of traffic (see graphic below)!
  • Post-launch, Eastbound SR 528 through traffic will not be allowed to use George King Blvd as a turn around, instead they will be directed south to SR 520.
  • Traffic light timing will be adjusted to ease congestion.
  • Be aware that launch times and days are subject to change, which will in turn extend, delay or potentially change our current launch traffic management plans.

Leisure Services

  • Classes resumed this week to 50% capacity. Attendees greatly appreciated being able to exercise again and one person came who actually chose to participate from outside. It was a great start.
  • As of Tuesday, May 26:
    • Playgrounds will open throughout the day
    • Basketball hoops will be re-installed at Canaveral City Park
    • Restrooms at parks will open
  • The Leisure Services Department will be implementing a new departmental programming software that will streamline front-end and back-end operations. It will eventually allow customers to reserve facilities, register for programs and events as well as PAY for those services online. We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as surely there might be some bugs, but we will do our best to eliminate any hiccups. We encourage you to look around, navigate and, if you ever think you’ll need to pay for a service (rental, summer camp, league, special event), create a household account.
  • The monument at Veterans Memorial Park received a facelift thanks to residents Henry and Josie Cooper. They worked with Council Member Raymond and Landscape Depot - who designed the monument area and performed all the work. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper also donated brand new flags. A big "Thank You" goes out to all involved.
  • While activated due to COVID-19 with the Air Force Reserves, our very own Aaron Leyte was “coined” as top performer by both of his commanders. Congratulations to Aaron and a big thank you for his service.

Sustainability

  • Barricades were set up at the end of Washington Avenue to help with the parking situation. Parking is only to be performed in designated parking areas where there are lines and a wheel stop.
  • Please be aware of the turtles. Turtle season is upon us and safety for the turtles is the City’s top priority. If you dig a hole, please be kind and fill it in.
  • New additional signage was installed on the beach crossovers educating people of the importance of turtle nesting season and also that dogs are prohibited on Cape Canaveral beaches.

Sustainability

Sea Turtle Safety Tip: Fill in your holes!

It is important to remember that we are currently in sea turtle nesting season, which officially runs from March through October. While we all love to enjoy our beautiful beaches they are not only used by us. At night over the next few weeks and months various sea turtle species will crawl up from the ocean and lay their eggs.

Digging holes on the beach and not filling them in can be very harmful to a nesting sea turtle. Sea turtles have been known to fall into deep holes dug and left by beachgoers. Sometimes these holes are too deep for sea turtles to crawl out of and they ultimately must be rescued or they unfortunately die. The same can be said for hatchlings trying to make their way to the ocean.

Please, if you dig a hole in the sand—or even build a sandcastle—remember to completely fill in the hole and leave only a flat surface. The City and the sea turtles will thank you!

A great phrase to remember is to "leave only footprints and only take pictures."
