Meet the new Board elected in April 2020
Chair: Ian Mac Eochagáin (full member)
Ian Mac Eochagáin is originally from Ireland and has lived in both Russia and Finland. He holds a BA in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin. He has run his own business, Maceochi Language Services, full-time since 2017. He primarily translates from Finnish to English in a range of fields and edits texts clients have written in English. He lives in Lohja and enjoys reading and running in his spare time. He has been chair of the board of NEaT since April 2019, and has just been re-elected for a second term. He is also head of the NEaT cooperation committee, which works on developing NEaT’s relationships with other organizations. He’s passionate about expanding NEaT’s presence in the other Nordic countries and raising the importance of quality in translation and editing.
Virve Juhola (full member) is one of the founding members of NEaT, former secretary of the board (2014-2015), former vice chair (2016-2017 and 2019-2020), and former chair (2017-2019). She has a master’s degree (MA) in translation studies from the University of Turku, and she’s been running her own language service Cape Context Oy since 2012. She translates into both Finnish and English and provides copywriting and ghostwriting for various companies, mainly tech-, design- and economy-related. She’s also a translator of mainly YA literature with more than 50 titles listed in the Finnish National Bibliography. She is currently head of NEaT’s communications committee.
Julie Uusinarkaus (full member) is one of the founding members of NEaT and the first chair (2014-2017), and has been a vice-chair and head of the education committee, but now it’s time for her to focus on events. She’s been an academic editor and translation revisor at the University of Helsinki and a freelance design editor since 2004. She has also lent her expertise as the editor and writer of a few design publications and served as the editor-in-chief of Finnfashion magazine, and is still a writer and member of the Around Journal collective.
Kate Sotejeff-Wilson (full member) enjoys midwifing people’s texts into being. She translates from Finnish, German and Polish, edits for authors writing in English, and runs writing retreats. Born in Wales, she did her history PhD research in London, Berlin, Poznań and Warsaw, and is now also a Finn. She serves on the ITI German Network and International Network committees and is looking forward to her second term on the NEaT board.
Alice Lehtinen, BA, (deputy member) is an editor at heart, but also translates from Finnish into English. In-house editor at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health for 11 years, she started freelancing in 2017 and now mainly edits academic articles and doctoral theses in health-related subjects. Welsh-born but half Finnish, she has lived in Finland for 25 years. She looks forward to heading the education committee for NEaT, starting this spring.
Kenneth Quek (deputy member) hails from Singapore and holds an MA in English Literature (National University of Singapore) as well as a Finnish tradenomi. He works as a freelance academic editor for the University of Helsinki, with particular experience on the LaTeX platform, as well as performing other editing and copywriting work for a variety of academic and corporate clients. He is a founding member of NEaT and has served on its board since its inception.
Albion M. Butters, PhD, (deputy member) brings a broad academic background to his editing and English revision work for various universities in Finland. In line with his doctorate from Columbia University in the History of Religion, he is editor of Studia Orientalia Electronica, published by the Finnish Oriental Society. As his scholarly interests have grown to include cultural and social studies, he is currently an Academy of Finland Research Fellow with the John Morton Center at the University of Turku. He is one of the founding members of NEaT.
Rebecca von Bonsdorff, BSc (geography), MA (English philology), (deputy member) is originally from England but has lived in Finland since 2000. A qualified teacher, her day job is teaching English at upper-secondary level but she also authors course books for adult and young-adult learners of English. When interesting projects come along, she translates Swedish to English and edits academic texts.
Treasurer: Daryl Taylor
BA (philosophy), BSc (chemistry) Authorised translator (FI-EN) since 1994 with a special interest in law and public administration. Long-serving lobbyist and activist in the Finnish trade union movement and in associations promoting the interests of immigrants and foreigners in Finland. Former Vice-Chairperson of the government-appointed Advisory Board for Ethnic Relations (ETNO).

NEaT Needs You: Are you available for a committee?
If the members are the lifeblood of NEaT, the committees are the heart, lungs and liver. (Let’s not take this metaphor too far… can you match the committee to the vital organ?) If you have a bit of extra time and would like to give something back, get to know your colleagues better, and shape the future of our organisation, this is a great way to start. Some committees meet only online or by email, while others meet physically a few times a year.
The communication committee coordinates and provides content for the NEaT website, these newsletters, and our social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. There’s a lot to do every week, so we would really appreciate a couple of helping hands! Please contact Virve at virve@capecontext.com if you feel you could write blurbs, posts and blog articles for NEaT members, provide graphic design for our materials, or take photos and curate our image bank, for example. We also have a printed brochure that needs updating.
The events committee does the fun stuff! Of course, we organize the Christmas party and the NEaT picnic. But we also need some serious eyes to the future. For example, would you like to help plan the first NEaT conference? Do you have an idea for a star academic or other speaker to bring to Helsinki? We need your help at all levels, from planning an entire conference structure to bringing napkins. Join us by contacting Julie at julie.uusinarkaus@helsinki.fi.
The cooperation committee is responsible for developing relationships with other organizations, be they in other Nordic countries or further afield. It would be nice to have some more input to this committee from people living in other Nordic countries, so don’t hesitate to contact Ian at iainmace@gmail.com if you want to join this committee.
The education committee develops seminars, roundtables and workshops for NEaT members. This is a very active and eager group who are in touch with what language professionals want to learn and discuss. Do you have ideas for future professional development sessions? Write on Wednesdays – or Tuesdays, or Thursdays?
Throughout lockdown Kate has been running online writing sessions on Wednesday mornings for people who have been on her retreats and is opening this up to NEaT members. We set goals together, write for an hour, take a half-hour break, and then write for another hour. This gives you a chance to chat about your work and help you focus. The MET humanities and social sciences network has been doing this for much longer on Tuesdays and Thursdays, co-ordinated by Wendy Baldwin. SENSE Online Conference

The Society of English-language Professionals in the Netherlands is holding its biennial conference online. As a sister organisation, NEaT members can attend at a reduced rate by entering the coupon code SisterOrg2020 (case sensitive, the wbtv number is for Dutch sworn translators for their CPD record, ignore that field).
Workshops are being held on Saturdays and some weekdays in the run-up to the conference and afterwards. You can sign up for just one workshop, or the whole programme, as it suits you.

EASE Virtual Conference

The European Association of Science Editors will host a virtual conference on the theme ‘editors and editing in times of crisis’.
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted most of the world, not only endangering lives and livelihoods but also raising issues over scientific reporting and credibility. The role of the editor in the transmission of credible, reliable, and quality-assured science has never been greater.
The conference is free to EASE members. To attend, you can join EASE for half price for half a year from 1 June 2020. As a sister organisation NEaT members can join EASE at a further reduced rate of 36 euros and attend the conference: contact secretary@ease.org.uk.
