An Arts Council of Surrey Exclusive
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Mayor Doug McCallum addresses the Arts & Cultural communities in Surrey during the Covid-19 crisis.
The City of Surrey understands the important role culture plays in ensuring the ongoing health and well being of our community. During a time of crisis, the arts have always provided us with a means to make sense of the world around us. We know Surrey’s creative community is finding ways to connect with our residents, to help us all cope with the unprecedented impacts the COVID pandemic is having on our lives and overcome the social isolation we are all experiencing.
The City demonstrates its support for our creative sector in many ways including its annual culture grant program. Over $500,000 is annually budgeted to help support the operations of Surrey’s not for profit cultural organizations as well as help produce various cultural projects such as community exhibitions, and performances. The 2020 funds were distributed to almost 100 organizations in February and are currently helping Surrey’s diverse cultural organizations through this challenging time. The City’s grant funding will also ensure many of the proposed cultural events, currently postponed due to facility closures, will still occur. As you know many artists and organizations are already transitioning their programming to online formats which will be available to our residents in the coming weeks if not already.
Surrey’s civic cultural institutions are also creating a rich portfolio of online programs and events for residents that showcase the work of artists and encourage us all to be creative.
Surrey Civic Theatres has begun hosting online live music concerts featuring local musicians and is also producing a series of radio plays working in partnership with local theatre companies.
The Museum of Surrey now offers virtual tours of its exhibition Arctic Voices, and anticipating the needs of families and schools for education materials, will soon have curriculum-based programs to provide fun learning opportunities about Surrey’s heritage and sustainability.
The Surrey Art Gallery also presents virtual tours of art exhibitions, including the work of Coast Salish artist Susan Point and Surrey’s beloved painter, Don Li-Leger. Residents can also watch video interviews with various artists or make art guided by online lessons from artists.
The story of our City’s response to the pandemic and our community’s resiliency will not be forgotten. Surrey’s Archives are collecting stories and images that document what we’re experiencing now, so those that follow us can learn from our experiences.
Over the course of this spring, Surrey’s poets will be writing about their experiences, musicians will be creating songs and artists will continue to create images and forms; all to comfort us, and to provide food for thought.
I look forward to joining you online to experience the wonderful creativity of Surrey.
Sincerely,
Doug McCallum: Mayor | City of Surrey
