COVID-19 Updates
Limited Research Reboot Begins Today
Last week, the university received clarification from New York State that research related to health, defense and national security (including research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics), and research in support of manufacturing will be eligible for University-approved reopening as early as today, Monday, May 18. Research involving human subjects is also being reactivated in a phased approach with all human subject-related research activities anticipated to resume by early June.
*All approved research activities must abide by strict social-distancing guidelines for the foreseeable future to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
To learn more about the medical center's plan to gradually reboot research visit our Guidance for Laboratory & Animal Research and Guidance for Human Subject Research webpages and view videos of Research Reboot Town Halls held recently for learners and for faculty.
URMC Examines Impact of Social Distancing
A new study by Elaine Hill, assistant professor of Public Health Sciences, and data scientists from Cornell University, proposes the continuation of social distancing. The study shows that while social distancing hasn't caused the daily number of new COVID-19 cases to decrease significantly, it does stabilize its spread rate. The researchers suggest new practices to permanently constrict the spread of COVID. Learn more in the UR Newscenter.
Coordinating COVID-19 Human Subject Research
As researchers across the university pivot to focus on COVID-19, a central group of researchers and clinicians at the medical center are working to ensure URMC offers studies that best meet the spectrum of patients’ needs while avoiding competition for study participant populations. Before pursuing COVID-19 human subject research studies, including interventional clinical trials (therapies, vaccines, procedures) and observational studies (biological sampling, surveys, other studies), all human subject researchers must complete a study interest form.
COVID-19 Collaboration Platform
The COVID-19 Collaboration Platform, created by teams at Harvard and Johns Hopkins, can help UR and URMC researchers join forces with other research teams across the country to create core clinical trial protocols, admit new sites under the existing PI and IRB, and share anonymized data with other sites that choose to independently operate a trial under a similar protocol. Submit your protocols for collaboration or contact Research Help to learn more.
Webinar: Community Resilience & Mental Health During COVID-19
Community-Campus Partnerships for Health and the UNC Center for Health Equity Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have partnered to launch the webinar series, Communities in Partnership: Ensuring Equity in the Time of COVID-19. This week, featured speakers will share from their work how we can understand the factors that support mental health and promote community resilience during COVID-19.

Protocols.io Will Enhance Research Rigor and Reproducibility
Researchers across UR may now access protocols.io, an open-access method of sharing laboratory and clinical trial/study protocols. Submitted protocols receive a unique DOI, can be linked directly to publications and record comments/suggestions from the research community. Protocols.io can also be used as a private virtual notebook for laboratory and computational procedures. Access to Protocols.io, which is provided by Miner Library in collaboration with the Scientific Advisory Committee, will help enhance rigor, reproducibility and scientific integrity.

Seven-Week Online Course in Translational Science
Translational science is an emerging field that seeks to identify broadly generalizable scientific and operational principles to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of translational research. In this course, students will learn preclinical translational science principles through a case study of a highly successful translational research partnership that produced a promising potential cancer drug, which is entering a first-in-human clinical trial in 2020.
The one-credit course, offered by the National Center for Advancing Translational Science and the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences, will run June 15 - July 31, 2020. There is a $50 registration fee.
