We're changing our newsletter for a short period. All our activities that are continuing have been moved online. Out of an abundance of caution, we're keeping links to those events on a Partners-only password-protected page. So announcements in this newsletter will not have links. We hope and expect to send you something closer to normal soon. Thank you for your patience in this unusual time.
A NOTE FROM RABBI GREG
Shalom Haverim,

We will be continuing to hold our weekly Shabbat services on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am over Zoom, but with a new twist! For Shabbat services on Saturday, May 16th and 30th only, and for the month of July, we will now be using our regular siddurim, Siddur Hadash, and we are inviting any and all who would like to join us for our Shabbat services in our Zoom sanctuary to stop by the CBH office and pick one or two up for your use at home during this time of sheltering in place. Please be sure to call the office before you stop by to make sure there will be someone there, 530-758-0842

UPCOMING EVENTS:
  • The evening of Thursday, May 28th, we will celebrate Shavuot (commemorating the giving of the Torah 7 weeks after Passover) with a Sacramento community-wide night of study, "Zooming to Sinai," beginning at 5:00 pm and going until 1:00 am. There will be programming for families and teens and adults. A full schedule is in the works. I will share that when it is ready. In the meantime, we can have a save the date for this program.
  • Friday night, May 29th, at 6:00 pm, will be our Confirmation service to which the whole community is invited to join as we celebrate the 9 stellar students: Ari Bukowski, Elie Bukowski, Noah Fisher, Alexa Folb, Itai Kalman, Eliana Oppenheim, Moriah Smith, Noa Vinokurov, Lennon Weintraub. The students will participate in leading our service, reading the Ten Commandments, and sharing their reflections on what being Jewish means to each of them.
  • On Saturday, May 30th, our Shabbat morning services beginning at 10:00 am will include a special yizkor service (usually around 11:45 am) to remember those loved ones who have died. On Saturday evening, May 30th at 5:00 pm, the community is invited to join us in a wonderful Adult B'nai Mitzvah ma'ariv celebration in our Zoom sanctuary (the link that we use for Shabbat mornings) as we call Paul Bennick, Hinda Chandler, Sasha Manesh, and Jaime Ordonez to the Torah to mark this special occasion.
A Note from the CBH Office Staff, Regarding Picking Up Siddurim:

The siddurim will be on a table in the office. After a pick-up day and time is arranged, our office staff will put the table and requested number of siddurim outside the office door. The office staff will need approximately ten minutes to set this up for you. Please remember to schedule your pick-up day and time in advance, or it is highly likely that no one will be at the office to assist you. Thank you!

Get Involved with a Havurah
A Havurah is a small group of CBH partners who gather together (virtually for now, real time for later) on a regular basis. The group may be primarily social and may or may not be centered around Jewish holidays. Groups can be formed based on common interests and life stages or may be diverse. It is up to each group. CBH can provide contact information and match partners with common interests. CBH can also assist during the formation stage. Once formed, partners decide together on activities and how often to meet. Havurot (plural of Havurah) are an important part of the Reform Jewish Community and a good way to keep people connected. Please contact havurah@bethaverim.org or the office if you are interested is being part of a Havurah. Please also contact us if you are part of an ongoing Havurah; we’d like to know which partners are involved and hear about your successes and simchas. We are looking forward to more community-building at CBH. Learn more: https://www.bethaverim.org/new-havurah-programs/

COOPED-UP CORNER
How to Make Bagels from Home - No Boiling Required!
If you’ve ever wanted to enjoy crispy-on-the-outside, chewy-on-the-inside everything bagels without leaving home, well, this is the recipe for you – no boiling required!

Ingredients:

BAGEL DOUGH:
2 cups self-rising flour
½ cup plain, nonfat Greek yogurt
½ tsp salt
¾ cup water (room temp or warm)
1 tsp active yeast (If you’re using yeast that comes pre-portioned, note that this is less than half of a full packet.)

TOPPINGS:
1 egg
1 tsp water
Pinch of sea salt
“Everything” seasoning

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat (which will keep the bottoms of your bagels from burning).
  2. In a bowl, mix together flour, salt, and yeast. Stir in yogurt and mix until it begins to combine. Add ¾ cup of water until the mixture combines and becomes sticky.
  3. Let dough sit for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Flour your hands as needed to prevent the dough from sticking, then divide dough into six equal parts. Shape each portion into a ball, using your thumbs to create a hole in the center of each and gently shaping each into a uniformly sized ring.
  5. Make an egg wash by whisking together the egg, salt, and water in a small bowl until smooth.
  6. Dunk each bagel into your egg wash mixture until it’s completely coated. Over a bowl, sprinkle your desired amount of everything bagel seasoning on all sides.
  7. Place each bagel on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

TIKKUN OLAM
Donate to the Yolo Diaper Bank Through May 31st

Yolo Diaper Bank will host a virtual diaper drive to help low-income families cope with diaper shortages during COVID-19. To participate in the drive visit www.yolodiaperbank.org now through May 31st and make a donation on the “Virtual Diaper Drive” page. Complete the section for honorary gifts, and Yolo Diaper Bank will send a note to let someone know you made a gift in their honor. All funds collected will be used to purchase diapers and wipes for families in Yolo County. Diapers are distributed through our agency partners which include CommuniCare Health Centers, Empower Yolo, and the Woodland Personal Care Pantry.

Every day, one in three families struggles to afford enough diapers for their babies. Now, COVID-19 has increased the need for diapers in our community. When diapers become unaffordable or unavailable, essential workers may not be able to take children to daycare. The added stress of having a fussy baby in a wet diaper can contribute to household instability, abuse, and neglect. In 2019, Yolo Diaper Bank distributed 36,000 diapers to families in need. By the end of May, Yolo Diaper Bank will have distributed over 37,000 diapers during 2020 alone.

Yolo Diaper Bank launched in September 2018 to address diaper need in our community. Yolo Diaper Bank works with local agencies to remove diaper need as a barrier to the health and stability of Yolo County families. Visit www.yolodiaperbank.org, e-mail info@yolodiaperbank.org, or call 530-723-6083 for more information.
