Soil Health Checkup:
Is Your Soil Teaming with Life?

Did you know that healthy soil is teaming with life? A single teaspoon of soil can contain over a billion bacteria (consisting of 20-30,000 unique species), several meters of fungal hyphae, several thousand protozoa, and up to 50 nematodes, all interwoven in a “eat and be eaten” set of relationships. This cycling of nutrients and energy is known as the soil food web and it underpins a plant's ability to get the nutrients and energy in needs. Fascinatingly this is two way exchange and it is actually the plant that is in control via its root exudates which attract the specific microbes needed for it to thrive. Join us for our June 3 online workshop to learn more.

More People Want to Grow Food Not Lawns in Edmonton!

That’s part of the beauty of a more natural landscape.
It’s far more diverse and complex than a lawn, but also
less maintenance once established. In permaculture, for
example, each plant adds something that helps the whole
system function properly.

Take a look at this great article about how many Edmontionians are starting to think differently about their yards.

Perhaps you too have been looking at your lawn and thinking "Couldn't we be doing something better with all of this space?" With Permaculture, we can endeavor to create spaces that actually take less work, less water and fewer inputs over time, while producing more food, sequestering more carbon and attracting more wildlife year-upon-year.

Starting To Notice The Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes can be a real nuisance in the summer, and often municipalities try to reduce their numbers by spraying harmful chemicals into the air and water. Many homeowners try natural solutions like citronella, or resort to using sprays with DEET.
Thankfully, nature has a solution for that: Bats!
According to researcher Jordi Seger "Bats can eat their own body weigh in mosquitoes every night— about 1,200 mosquito-sized insects per hour." That's pretty impressive!
By introducing a bat box to a south-facing location on your yard, you can welcome these adorable flying mammals (like this Little Brown Bat) into your space. This is all the more important as bats lose habitat and populations continue to suffer from white-nose syndrome. So this season, let the bats take care of the mosquitoes while you sleep and put the DEET back on the shelf!
