The CDC has estimated that the annual rate of new HIV transmissions held essentially steady in the United States between 2014 and 2018. An estimated 1.2 million people 13 years old or older were living with HIV at the end of 2018, including 14% who remained undiagnosed.

When some people with HIV need to undergo an allogeneic stem cell transplantation in order to treat different types of blood cancer. These allogeneic stem cells may not completely remove the virus from the body, despite a drastic reduction in the number of infected cells.

Women are more likely to be on HIV treatment

Globally, among people living with HIV aged 15 years and older, coverage of antiretroviral therapy in 2018 was higher for women than for men. Numerous studies have shown that men are less likely than women to take an HIV test and to initiate and adhere to HIV treatment, which results in poorer clinical outcomes and a greater likelihood that they will die of AIDS-related causes.
