The Monthly for April 2020 (Lockdown Edition)

During the Lockdown, Community Arts Partnership has had to find ways of showcasing our projects as we were unable to hold our gala events, many of which take place in March.

The Seamus Heaney Awards for New Writing and Achievement are usually announced at major events in the Ulster Hall and at Homeplace but this year we had an online presentation. We are following that up with this special Seamus Heaney Awards edition of The Monthly.

We have interviews from Clare Gallagher, the winner of the this year's Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing and Vedika Upadhyay, the winner of the Seamus Heaney Award for Achievement. Shelley Tracey, CAP's Poetry in Motion project co-ordinator, has put together a three part presentation of the thoughts, the inspirations and the poems from the runner up, and those shortlisted and longlisted for the prize. We also have some thoughts from participants regarding the importance of poetry during times of crisis.

If we go back a month or so, articles posted in March were committed to celebrating  Community Arts Partnership's 20th anniversary with interviews of former staff members, Clare McComish and Carole Kane. Ed Carroll from Community Arts Organisation, Blue Drum, talks about his collaborations with Community Arts Partnership and we have included some thoughts on the Ethics of Community Arts written by Francois Matarasso.

And a little further back, the February edition has interviews with Marta Burgell, from Catalonia and Gabri Gomez, from Lugo in Spain, both of whom worked for Community Arts Partnership. We interview Matt Rice, a local poet and runner up in the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing in 2017.

We speak to Darren Ferguson, former Community Arts Partnership Board member, about being a recipient of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's Anne O’Donoghue Award, and Maria Doyle reviews Jane Weaver's performance during the Out to Lunch Festival. Finally we include the Minority Community Network's first television production, the talk show, Shared Stories.
The Monthly is open for your contributions.
