Advice on handling CV-19-positive cases on your dairy farm
Below please find some guidance regarding the procedure on handling CV-19-positive cases on your dairy farm compiled by MPO executive head Dr Chris van Dijk:

  1. Guidance for symptom monitoring and management of essential staff with CV-19-related illness
Milk producers are urged to the guiding principles published by the Department of Health to prevent CV-19 as far as possible entering a farm. To read, click HERE.

  1. In case you do have positive cases – no official documentation exists for a dairy farm

  1. According to a medical doctor on the official COVID-19 help line (0800 02 9999), they do not have a “ready-to-use” protocol and each situation will be treated on a per case basis.
  2. The medical doctor again emphasised that prevention is the best approach – disinfect all contact areas in the parlour after every milking with either alcohol or a bleach (chlorine) solution. Make sure that you do not contaminate the milk!
  3. A CV-19 operational plan decision tree (flow diagram) was developed by a dairy processor and can also apply to a milking unit (dairy farm). To view the flow diagram, click HERE.
  4. According to the medical doctor a service provider for sanitising is not compulsory; you can do this yourself. When procuring sanitation products make sure from the material safety data sheet (MSDS) that you can use a product in your parlour.
  5. Use the existing COVID-19 deep clean procedure for the process following a positive case. Click HERE to view the document.
Official care guides are available from the Department of Health. Click HERE, HERE and HERE to view the guides.

Eastern Cape farmers help to feed the hungry

Thank you to the members and friends of MPO for your generous contributions to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. They donated up to 1% of daily milk production and other food parcels to feed the most vulnerable and needy members of our society.

The Nompumelelo Village outreach by Grasslands Agriculture in the Eastern Cape is an initiative to bring relief and help fight the effects of the lockdown on the local community. They supplied and handed out food parcels to approximately 1 000 households with the help and support of community members.
This is seen as a major opportunity to demonstrate the dairy industry’s commitment to building a healthy society through the consumption of a nutritious, affordable, and accessible source of food.
