Happy Friday...and it IS a happy one!  Lots of great news coming so let's get right to it...
BEACHES OPEN

I've been sending out tons of good juju for this day...I'm a HUGE believer in salty air and sandy toes being good for the soul and it's finally happening! Things are slowly opening up - here's the latest about our beach...

TODAY:  the boardwalk and beach are open in Bethany for exercising/walking (doing a happy dance) - though no dogs allowed on beach (May 15 - Oct 15).
MAY 22: the beach opens up for swimming/sitting/tanning and surf fishing minimums lifted (doing cartwheels).

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Face coverings are REQUIRED on boardwalk and 'strongly encouraged' on beach
  • Must maintain social distance of at least 6 feet from anyone not that's not part of your household whether moving or sitting/laying
  • Passengers in surf fishing vehicles must all be from the same household and vehicles must be spaced at least 10 feet apart
  • Out-of-Staters must still self-quarantine for 14 days
  • Short-term rentals still banned
Here's a detailed article about May 22nd and here's every detail from Governor Carney himself.

IT'S A GOOD THING
Tons of ways to help, feel good, support local and so much more...
SAVE THE TURTLES
I got an email last week from one of the 'Buzz's regulars (shout out to Karen L!) about all the baby turtles crossing the road...and yikes, they are...'tis the season!  She and her husband had taken a bike ride from Bethany over the Indian River bridge to the Indian River Marina (they were most definitely socially distancing).  As they were biking down toward Hammerheads, they noticed a baby terrapin crossing the road. They helped it (making sure to keep it in the direction it was heading), then noticed that there were 6-7 others on the road that -er- hadn't made it safely across.  They waited a bit and saw two more come out of the grasses and start toward the road which was relatively busy and, of course, helped them too.

While we can't help them all, we can do our part...check out the graphic below for what to do if you see 'crossers', especially if they're grown-up snappers, and here's more about our terrapins.
THE SPAWNING

Horseshoe crab spawning season has begun!  Around the full and new moons in May-June, thousands of males and females crawl onto sandy beaches in the Inland Bays to mate and lay their eggs.

You may have heard that horseshoe crab eggs serve as a vital food source for migratory shorebirds and that the species is important for our economy (e.g., ecotourism and bait for eel and whelk fisheries), but did you know that they also play a special role in medicine? An extract in their blue blood - Limulus amebocyte lysate or LAL for short - is used to test vaccines for bacterial contamination. The current need for a COVID-19 vaccine just reinforces the importance of this keystone species and efforts to protect and restore their habitat.

Learn more about the DE Center for the Inland Bays, their Horseshoe Crab Survey and get involved here.

More stuff will be opening up next week/weekend and I'll be sure to have it all laid out for ya in next Friday's edition of the 'Buzz!  And, be on the lookout for AWESOMELY HAYUGE NEWS!!!!  In the meantime, which one are you?

   EVENTS

All events are cancelled until further notice.  Some businesses are working on virtual events and as those start becoming a reality, I will let you know!  In the meantime, if you do check the online calendar, I haven't deleted everything because I'm an eternal optimist and hope that I won't have to...fingers crossed ;-)
