At each C.O.LA. meeting, we discuss one of the Concepts of Service. Similar to the Steps and Traditions, there are 12 Concepts of Service. With May being the 5th month, the COLA Chair is sharing on Concept Five: Consideration.

Concept Five:

CONSIDERATION

"Individuals have the right of appeal and petition in order to ensure that their opinions and personal grievances will be carefully considered."

This week as I perused social media, I found myself unable to fathom how others could believe such different ideas from my own. Concept 5 reminds me to give careful consideration to others' viewpoints--not just once but even upon appeal. It's human nature to overlook or even shun the opinions of others at first, so the Concepts call on us to reconsider our initial decisions.

I feel grateful I have done the necessary work on myself (12 Steps), learned to have healthy relationships (12 Traditions), and then have become willing to sit with the discomfort of listening to and respecting the opinions of others even if I don't want to at first. Perhaps if everyone could rely on the wisdom of this program of recovery, we would arrive at the true group conscience of a loving Higher Power.

I recognize my powerlessness over others and choose to turn my will and life over to the care of God as I understand Him. That means suffering through consideration of others. It's not fun but it's worth it. I'm doing my small part to build the world I want to live in.
