Little Ship Club of Canterbury

The Little Ship Club of Canterbury is a branch of Naval Point Club Lyttelton. We are a fun group of sailors, who gather on a regular basis to discuss articles of interest, listen to key note speakers and organising events both on and off the water related to our common involvement with the sea and those who sail on it. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in any of our events and activities.
Check out our
website and like our Facebook page to be kept up to date with everything going on

Kia Ora everyone,

Thanks so much to David Kennett for his great online talk about cruising the North Island a couple of weeks ago. We had a large crowd of people online listening to the talk. David always gives some great navigation and safety tips along with the stories of their adventures along the way. I hope you've been in to spend your Oborns Nautical voucher David!

It is great to FINALLY be allowed back out on the water! I was so excited to get out on Thursday that I managed to suck some sludge up in to my fuel filters from the bottom of the tank and had to sail back in to the marina. We were heading out to meet Bill Norrie on board his boat Pixie. Bill had sailed all the way from Canada on a solo circumnavigation - last stop was South Africa 3 months ago! It was great to be able to welcome him to Lyttelton. He is berthed on C pier if you want to head down and meet Bill and see Pixie - a tiny 28' Bristol Channel Cutter. Some more info here

Tomorrow - Sunday is the first day of the Naval Point Winter Series. This is a great relaxing way to try racing if you haven't done so before. The race course is a short triangle - one windward and two downwind legs. Everyone starts at 1pm and finishes at 3pm (I think) and the race officers count how many laps you do and how long it takes you to get around. It is great fun! You can enter online here: https://www.revolutionise.com.au/npcl/events/59064/

As the yacht club bar is still closed, we will postpone our scheduled May talk to August. Hopefully we will be good to go on the 3rd week of June!

We are looking for some speakers or topics for later in the year. If you have something you'd love to hear about or know of someone who'd have a great story to share. please let me know! And if you haven't paid a sub yet for this financial year, we'd really appreciate your $20 to help us buy some small gifts for our speakers and assist with the club's running expenses. The bank account details are below.

Can't wait to see you all again really soon!

Cheers

Sailing to Fiji This Year?

Is anyone considering a passage to Fiji this season?

Tania Davies is working with various parties & authorities to get a definite answer but needs a Yes or a No this week.

She has been "instructed" that information is required on how many vessels would still be interested to come this year.

The details requested are: Capt or Owner/Vessel Name / Vessels Location/ Crew #/ email address which can be PM to Tania or Jo Pullin.

Very IMPORTANT it is only for vessels that have been in NZ and Departure from NZ directly to Fiji Islands.
Secondly, the crew have to have been in NZ for at least 3 months in Isolation.

All vessels are checked on current location prior to adding to the List.

More info on the following page: please spread the word!

Thanks
Tania

Single Handed Sailing - Equipment Tips and Experiences
With Tim Bloy's entry to the Solo Trans Tasman race completed he had to complete a 300 nautical mile solo passage on board the family yacht Nelly Rose an X Yacht 412. What better way than sail solo from Fiji back to New Zealand.

Tim joins us to discuss weather forecasting, useful equipment, technology, sleep and watch keeping strategies to ensure a safe and low stress passage from a single handed perspective.

We are hoping this event will go ahead on the 18th June.

Stories from the RNI
The Round North Island two handed yacht race is about to start in Auckland on the 22nd February.
