AAU NEWS: Issue 79

Secretary General's Message

Dear Colleagues

I bring you greetings from the AAU Secretariat

I wish our Muslim community a belated HAPPY EID-UL-FITR!

We at the Secretariat have been involved in several activities that I am pleased to share with you in this newsletter.

As part of the HAQAA Phase 2 Project we hosted two well attended webinars (English & French) on the rationale, benefits and the way forward for African Universities in relation to the African Quality Rating Mechanism. HAQAA refers to Harmonisation of African Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation and is being implemented by OBREAL Global Observatory (coordinator), AAU, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education).

A webinar on the “Emerging Issues and Rapid Response to Students Needs and Support Services” was hosted on the 14th May 2020 which brought together 100 staff that work in students’ affairs departments in African Universities to discuss various issues.

On 19th May 2020, AAU also hosted over 80 library and information professionals from African Universities in a webinar themed "Supporting Academic Libraries in the COVID-19 Era"

On the 21st May 2020, over 90 African Higher Education stakeholders participated in a webinar that brought together African National Higher Education Regulatory Agencies to discuss their response to COVID-19 and the related opportunities and challenges.

I also gave a solidarity message in English and French to the African Higher Education stakeholders.

Additionally, the AAU participated in a prayers for humanity on the 14th of May 2020. Among those who participated were the Archbishop of Canterbury, His Eminence Prof. Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the Center for Interreligious Dialogue in Iran, the Islam Adyan Foundation, the World Jewish Congress, the Institute of Jainology, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the World Council of Churches, as well as Buddhist representatives, and Hindu spiritual leaders.

Also be informed that the AAU Faculty Online Modular Training (FOMT) is scheduled for 4th June 2020 to 27th August 2020.  This online teaching modular training is targeted at all academics in African Universities to help them enhance their skills in online and remote teaching and learning. No participation fees are required and this is the Registration Link.

An European Commission initiative of cultural breaking-out for youth from Europe, Africa and the Mediterranean has been featuring the EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL on-line and providing freely accessible films. The “Meet the Neighbours of the Neighbours” EU-Africa Film initiative has been available on your screens from 9th May to 4th June: MeetEU and MeetAfrica

I welcome you to read the updates and news items that we have compiled for your information and benefit. Let us all stay safe and follow the instructions detailed by the Health Authorities in our various countries. I also invite you to join the various planned webinars and other programmes that the AAU will be rolling out within this period and beyond.

Yours in the Service of Higher Education in Africa
Professor Etienne Ehouan Ehile
