Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #449 - 19 May 2020

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from the

14 May, from Ku Ring Gai Police Area Command: SCAM!

If you receive one of these emails, then DELETE! But firstly, lets break down what was sent to us and see if what appears to be legitimate is really a scam.

Emails are randomly picked by scammers. This email was sent to me. The Scammer was hoping I would unwittingly click on the link provided. Before doing anything, slow down and think clearly. If an email or text for that matter comes to you out of the blue, then do not engage the originator.

So, we receive one of these emails. We suddenly panic and start clicking, worried our account has been compromised. Almost as suddenly, we’ve lost hundreds or thousands of dollars.

So, let’s break this down and approach the situation logically. To do this, spend a couple of minutes before you take any action at all. Go through the suspicious email word by word, line by line and or, phone a friend if you are suspicious of any email sent to you.

EMAILER’S CLAIM: Your Westpac online banking services has been disabled on March 26, 2020.
MY THOUGHTS: I don’t have a Westpac account, online or otherwise. Why are you emailing me?

EMAILER’S CLAIM: Membership alert.
MY THOUGHTS: I’m not a member or client of Westpac, so why are you emailing me?

EMAILER’S CLAIM: Unauthorised access notification.
MY THOUGHTS: Are you notifying me of a pending unauthorised access by YOU?

EMAILER’S CLAIM: Important information.
MY THOUGHTS: Not for me – remember, I don’t have a Westpac account.

EMAILER’S CLAIM: We’ve noticed that someone made a purchase on amazon.com.au
MY THOUGHTS: Good for you. I’m certain many people make purchases on amazon.

EMAILER’S CLAIM: For your protection we’ve disabled your card for online purchases.
MY THOUGHTS: Oh, ok. A bit difficult to disable my card when I don’t have one – and what, disabled just for online purchases? How does this work?

EMAILER’S CLAIM: Please make sure these transactions were made by you.
MY THOUGHTS: Huh? I don’t have a Westpac card, so how could I have made any transactions online in the first place?

EMAILER’S CLAIM: You can check your account statements by clicking on the link below.
MY THOUGHTS: No, I can’t. Remember, I don’t have an account with Westac. How can I check statements I don’t have?

EMAILER’S CLAIM: Click here to login.
MY THOUGHTS: No way SCAMMER!

MY RESPONSE: DELETED WITHOUT CLICKING ON LINK.

Please spend a little time and look closely at any suspicious email or text before you let your fingers start clicking. You'll save yourself from a whole world of hurt.

15 May, from Cop Humour Australia

“Good afternoon, I would like to express my gratitude! Yesterday working in Coffs Harbor my offsider and I decided on Subway for lunch. While finishing our order a member of the public paid for both our lunches and left without saying a word to us. It wasn’t until we reached the till that we were told our lunch had been paid for. With all that is going on at the moment with the coronavirus and the unemployment, just shows there are still people out there that appreciate the work we do as police.”

We love getting these kind of messages to our inbox! Thank you to whoever the anonymous random legend is out there!

18 May, from 9news.com.au: Man charged over parents' deaths to be extradited back to Queensland to face court
The man charged over the deaths of his parents in their home north of Brisbane, will return to Queensland tomorrow after appearing in a Sydney court this morning.
Christopher Puglia, 31, did not appear at Parramatta Local Court today after the deaths of his parents Frank and Loris, both 59, and did not apply for bail.
Their bodies were found at their bed and breakfast at Joyner on Sunday, and police allege he killed his parents on Saturday.
Mr Puglia was found across the border, 900km away, allegedly in his father's new car.
NSW highway patrol officers acting on intelligence stopped and arrested him on the M1 at Berowra, north of Sydney, about four hours after the discovery of the bodies.
He will be extradited by road to Brisbane tomorrow by Queensland detectives to face court on May 21.

17 May, thank you to Robyn who contacted us yesterday: Hi I have a photo of an unknown substance I caught a man throwing in the ground along the street besides Jaycar Hornsby.
It had an odd smell. He didn’t notice me, I caught up to him once he stopped at the corner at Jaycar and I smiled but he looked very ashamed. I have no idea what it is but I was concerned that it is or something toxic to animals/pets. That’s the substances, they smelled strange and he had it in a Mount Franklin 1.5L bottle and was flicking it on the ground as he was walking along. Not sure if it is worth posting to pet owners just in case someone walks their dog that way.

From the comments: They look like poppy seeds. They are easy to get in bulk. If he had them in a bottle he was likely drinking what is called 'poppy wash' which is where you extract the opium from them and drink them. Guy was getting his buzz on.

13 May, from smh.com.au: Northern beaches man sentenced for online 'sextortion' of 49 children

A 24-year-old northern beaches man has been sentenced to almost 10 years in jail for his "cruel and relentless" manipulation of 49 children and teenage boys, who he lured online and blackmailed into sending sexually explicit content.

Kurtis Whaley, from Manly Vale, used Instagram, Snapchat, Skype and other social media platforms to pose as a 16-year-old girl named "Beth," to solicit sexually explicit images and videos from boys aged between eight and 15.

In January Whaley pleaded guilty to 54 child sexual abuse offences, linked to the production, possession, solicitation and transmission of child abuse material over a period of almost five years.

On Tuesday NSW District Court Judge Ian Bourke SC sentenced Whaley to a maximum nine years and six months in jail, with a non-parole period of six years and four months.

12 May, from the Department of Health:

Australians aged 70 years or older, 65 years or older with chronic health problems, Indigenous Australians 50 years or older or with chronic health problems and people with compromised (weakened) immune systems will continue to be encouraged to stay at home where possible, as governments across Australia move forward with a new 3-step COVIDSafe plan.

National Cabinet announced its 3-step plan on Friday 8 May. The plan provides a pathway for states and territories to move toward COVIDSafe communities in a way that suits their circumstances. States and territories will be able to move between the steps on the pathway at different times, in line with their public health situation and local conditions. They’ll need to maintain steady case numbers and be able to rapidly contain any outbreaks. Vulnerable people should continue to stay home where possible.

The first steps are cautious ones. It is important we do not move too quickly and risk losing the control we have achieved. The first steps will see some businesses start to reopen, and more people able to return to the workplace as we start to allow groups of up to 10 people to be together in homes and in the community. These steps help build a COVIDSafe economy, but also give Australians more opportunities to connect with family and friends.

It is important to remain vigilant and for all businesses to develop a plan to operate in a COVIDSafe way. Safe Work Australia has resources for workplaces in the Aged Care industry on COVID-19.

All Australians are being asked to take steps to help slow the spread of coronavirus. This includes that we must all commit to:

staying 1.5 metres away from other people whenever and wherever we can
maintaining good hand washing and cough/sneeze hygiene
staying home when we’re unwell, and getting tested if we have respiratory symptoms or a fever
downloading the COVIDSafe app so we can find the virus quickly, and
developing COVID safe plans for workplaces and plans.

Australia’s success depends on us making these behaviours part of our daily lives during the pandemic to keep us COVIDSafe. Whenever you leave home, you should think about how you’re going to keep yourself, family, friends and co-workers safe. Make conscious choices about what you do and when you do it. This is particularly important for people who are at greater risk of serious illness from COVID-19, their friends and their family.

It remains especially important for people to stay at home as much as possible if they are:

aged 70 years or older
aged 65 years or older with chronic medical conditions
an Indigenous Australian aged 50 years or older with chronic medical conditions
a person with a compromised (weakened) immune system.
