Legislative Action: Senator Ortt and Assemblymen Norris and Hawley have come through for us again. They, along with other upstate legislators, have introduced in the New York State Senate and Assembly bills that would require industrial wind or solar projects to be approved by a town referendum before they are given a permit to build. This would give communities the last word in industrial renewables projects that are so large they change the character of a town and have negative consequences for wildlife and habitats.
These bills would balance the immense funding advantage that out of state corporations have over rural towns and counties by giving these communities a meaningful voice. Imagine if the corporations proposing these projects, under threat of losing a referendum, had to modify their applications to address local issues? It would save communities much time and money in that only projects that have solid community support would move forward.
