Dear Jones Family,

I hope you were able to get out for some exercise and fresh air this week, even if it meant dodging the raindrops! This week's update includes important news for everyone, but especially our Class of 2020 graduates.

Virtual Graduation Celebration 2020:  I am sorry to report that we will not be able to hold the “drive-through” graduation celebration we were planning for June 7. This week, CPS provided guidelines that prohibit any type of in-person graduation, including “drive-through” or similar events.  Along with other CPS high schools, we are shifting our planning to a Virtual Graduation Celebration. This event will include many of the same elements we would have had in our traditional graduation ceremony, while also providing an opportunity for each graduate to wear their cap and gown and record a personal message. This will be a great way for the Class of 2020 to share their graduation celebration with family and friends. Details of this program will be forthcoming. Because of this change, we anticipate our virtual ceremony will take place in early July.

Cap and Gown Pick-Up and Senior Check-Out:  Senior families will receive a letter in the mail outlining our cap and gown pick-up and related senior check-out activities on June 3-5.

Graduation Yard Signs: Seniors began picking up their graduation yard signs this week, and they are sprouting up all over Chicago. Sign pick-up will continue next week. Thanks, again, to Friends of Jones for providing this memorable gift to our Class of 2020 graduates. I think this is going to be a new tradition at JCP!

Graduation Fees Waived / Donations Accepted:  Due to the economic hardship so many of our families are facing and the changing nature of our graduation celebration, we are waiving the graduation fee for the Class of 2020. Jones will absorb all graduation-related costs (caps and gowns, diploma covers, announcements, etc.), the total cost of which is approximately $50 per graduate.  If you would like to make a donation of any amount to help defray these costs, please click the following link: https://secure.friendsofjones.org/donation.jsp?campaign=24&

Summer School Goes Remote:  Due to the ongoing ban on in-person school activities, we are shifting our summer school classes to a remote learning format.  Details will follow in next week's update.

Bravo, Ms. Foshay! Our Jones dance teacher, Ms. Elisa Foshay, has been named the 2020 Illinois Dance Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD). Ms. Foshay built our dance program from the ground up and has made it the best in CPS! This is the second year in a row that a Jones teacher has been recognized by IAHPERD; Mr. Andrew Picket was named Illinois Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2019. Our students are indeed fortunate to have such fine teachers!

Thank you all for your continued support. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Best wishes,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.
