LOCAL BREAKING NEWS

Show Holidays

Councillor Winston Johnston Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council advises....

Earlier this year, both the Maleny Show Society and the Nambour Show Society announced that they have cancelled their respective shows for this year as a result of the impacts of COVID19.

Confirmation from the Queensland Government’s Office of Industrial Relations has been received that the gazetted Public Holidays for both Shows will remain in effect even though the Shows are no longer being held. The Gazetted Dates are:

29th May 2020 – Maleny Show Day
12th June 2020 – Nambour (Sunshine Coast) Show Day

This action is consistent across the State of Queensland, with the exception of any Show Society that is considering to change the date of their show for 2020.

The PM stated yesterday "we are 6 weeks into a 6 month plan". Honestly it seems like 6 months already! Most people now work in environments that can best be characterised as fluid, because they are subject to continual change.

I had a conversation with a cafe owner in Maleny and she tells me she and her staff are exhausted as they constantly have to think about everything they do when serving us.  We go to a cafe place our order stand back and wait for it and off we go but for the cafe employees there is a lot more "thinking" that goes with every order they take. She is very grateful for Maleny getting behind her business and every other cafe and restaurant in town as it's helping them survive and keeps locals employed.

With unemployment expected to jump to 10% it is important we keep supporting local businesses where we can.

Job Keeper payments have started to flow with sole traders the last to receive their funds this week. The first payment of $3000 has been paid to most with another $1500 due any time soon.

Still the information for businesses about COVID 19 is flowing and can be daunting. If you are overwhelmed or confused by so much information, there are now professional advisers who can give you up to 1 hour free of charge.  If you need some professional assistance contact the Sunshine Coast Council's Professional Advice Program

CCIQ our peak body has organised Business webinar series to help you at this time. The daily cases have dropped, but the peak in business casualties is still coming. Get your business into peak condition over the next five weeks with CCIQ's Getting Back to Business webinar series, presented by handpicked experts in small business digital, marketing, sales and communication.
Border closures have massive impact on tourism - Qld visitors down by 62.7%
The border closures certainly have an impact on the spread of COVID 19 but it also has a major impact on tourism. In an economic outlook today, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said domestic and international air travel is down by 97%. The map below shows the impact state by state.

Hinterland Tourism President Kerry Brown advises that Queensland generates 700 million dollars through the Wedding industry alone. The Sunshine Coast generates 50 to 60 million of that. The on flow effect this has to other smaller local businesses is huge.

MORE THAN EVER IT IS IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES.

If you are sitting at home with an idea on how a small business could evolve or benefit at this time then share your ideas with them. Now is the time to come together and work together.

A message and your feedback required  Fiona Simpson MP & David Crisafulli MP
With Queensland Parliament resuming for the first full sitting since the onset of Coronavirus, we wanted to reach out to your members in this critical time.

In recent weeks we have been inundated with feedback from across the State with businesses (many in the tourism and hospitality industries) asking us to raise several issues in State Parliament including:
  • The failure to implement a framework for commercial leasing
  • The lack of clarity over the assessment of applications under the QRIDA Business Loan Scheme
  • Social distancing requirements and patron capacity in venues with multiple areas (including outdoor spaces)
We would welcome feedback on these matters as well as any improvements to the State response to COVID19.

As a key sector in the economic recovery, it is vital that small business has a say in the structure of these support programmes that will be so critical to get our State back on its feet.

From our perspective, we will advocate strongly on your behalf but in a positive way. This is not the time for pointless partisan politics.

We would appreciate you seeking feedback from your members and would welcome the sharing of this correspondence.

Should you wish to discuss the matter further we can be contacted on the details below.

Best wishes,
