Google’s May 2020 Core Update

Dear Reader

I hope this email finds you safe and well.

Amidst the other turmoil happening around us all, you may have heard that Google released another major update to its search algorithm. (Google updates the algorithm daily, but several times a year it does a major update.) This one is officially called the May 2020 Core Update and while it may affect your site, it’s not going to have as big an effect as last year’s BERT update had on many sites.

If you notice, or have already noticed, a decrease in your search traffic, it could be a result of this core update. Thankfully there are four things you can do to boost your search rankings and traffic:

  1. Do an SEO audit.
  2. Upgrade your top content.
  3. Review your content promotion strategy.
  4. Create more content.
If you want more information about the update and these mitigation strategies, check out my latest post on the K. M. Wade blog, Google algorithm update May 2020.

So this newsletter’s action is for you to check your Google search traffic and see how it’s changed over the last three months. To do this, open Google Search Console and click on the ‘performance’ tab. The default settings will show your impressions and clicks over the last three months. (When someone googles a phrase and a page from your website shows up in the search results, that’s an impression. When someone clicks on the search listing for that page and visits the page, that’s a click.) There’s a noticeable decrease or increase in impressions and/or clicks between 4 May and now, there’s a good chance that’s a result of the May 2020 Core Update.

Your task: review your last 3 months of website impressions and clicks using Google Search Console

If you haven’t set up Google Search Console yet, I highly recommend you do so. It’s a great way to track your Google search traffic without compromising your visitors’ privacy and it enables you to do other very useful things to improve your website. You can get started here, and there are instructions here. (If you use WordPress and you don’t know how to modify your header in order to verify your site, download a plugin that will enable you to easily modify your header.)

If you have any questions about using Google Search Console to learn about your site, just reply to this email.

I hope you have a great day and I look forward to sharing more marketing tips and advice in my next email.

Cheers
Kelly
