To the surprise of few, one company flourishing in the new world is home fitness startup Peloton. In the company’s latest earnings, the startup reported revenues of over $520 million with 866,000 subscribers, against an estimate of 857,000. Perhaps the most impressive reported figure however, was its monthly churn rate of just 0.46%. Pretty impressive for a digital subscription business (as a point of comparison, Spotify reported a record low churn of 4.6% last year). With much of the globe indoors, Peloton will be wondering how long the trend of home fitness stays with us, with some commentators suggesting that the shift to home fitness could be semi-permanent as consumers become less inclined to visit spaces with a high risk of infection. The company is rumoured to be launching a series of new products next year, including a redesigned treadmill and a rowing machine.

 

Google has announced it is to unify its communication teams in an effort to streamline its product strategy. The move puts all Google’s major communication products, including the likes of Messages, Duo, Hangouts and Chat, under the leadership of VP of G Suite, Javier Soltero. The exact mission of the new team isn’t fully clear yet but there are rumours that Google could be working on a brand new unified communications app that would ship as part of G Suite, designed to compete with the likes of Slack and Microsoft Teams.

 

Tinder is also improving its comms capabilities with reports suggesting that a new video dating feature launch is on the horizon. Parent company Match has yet to confirm the reports but it is thought that fellow Match group product Plenty of Fish acted as a test bed for video call dating before it rolls out across Tinder, too. Competitors including Bumble and Facebook dating already have a head start with video dating so Tinder will be playing catch up. Engagement on dating apps is surging during the lockdown, with the average number of messages sent per day up 27% in April.

New product launch - Square launches online checkout to take on PayPal

With Online Checkout, Square is catering to all manner of business, regardless of whether they want a Square-powered website — or any website, for that matter. An online fitness instructor who is temporarily giving classes over Zoom might not have any desire to create an entire online store, so a solution such as this could work well. New product features - Google updates the Docs share menu 

We’re updating the interface you use to share files from Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms on the web. This will replace the previous interface used to share files and manage members of shared drives. These changes will make it easier to share files only with specific people without expanding access beyond what’s needed. (Google Product blog)
 

 


Startups - Challenger bank N26 raises $100m

German digital bank N26 has raised an additional $100 million in funding, as it braces for economic uncertainty from the coronavirus pandemic. The investment, backed by existing investors such as Chinese tech giant Tencent and Peter Thiel’s Valar Ventures, is an extension to the company’s Series D investment round announced early last year. It brings the total raised in that round to $570 million, while the company has now raised $770 million to date. (CNBC)
