President's Message

Listening to the news reports Covid-19 has companies rethinking how they are going to structure their businesses going forward. The same is happening to the BACPS, and amidst the chaos, I see a better, more active, and more fun organization developing. For example, our speaker this month is going to be sitting comfortably, if maybe a little bleary-eyed and ready for bed, in the UK. I see virtual meetings becoming a permanent feature of the BACPS schedule even though I’m looking forward to seeing you in person again.

Virtual BACPS Show and Sale

We are working furiously to create the first Virtual BACPS Show & maybe sale. Start taking pictures of the plants that you want to enter. Expect expanded and new categories that were not possible or practical in an on-site show and sale. Bear with us as we are building this fast and furiously. If you have had any experience with any other clubs doing something like this please contact me here. The more input the better.

Facebook, Instagram, and Online Presence

All that being said, we need to up our game for web presence and backend systems. I am putting together a group of friendly helpful people that want to be active moderators and posters for the BACPS. If you love carnivorous plants and want to help the BACPS and its members by keeping up with posts, create polls, and keep content up to date, please, WE NEED YOU! Send me an email. Some of these positions could become board positions.

Backend Systems

We have a couple of web experts working on our backend automation but more input is always appreciated. We need a cloud-based database to track members and it should automate memberships. We are putting together a system to handle submissions for the show and sale as well. If you have experience with any of these things or have some ideas, could you reach out to me? You don’t have to feel committed to implementing these things if you don’t have time. But there is so much out there to look at, your experience might help us get it right the first time. Send me an email.

Newsletter Content from you!

We want to add content to our newsletters from you! Yes YOU, our BACPS members! We can’t meet face to face, and even if we do, we often don’t get to talk long. Share with us a picture of you with your plants. If you are really ambitious, tell us how long you have been a cp grower, what your first plant was, what was your favorite plant this, and what is your favorite now. Share a tip or something that you learned that surprised you. Send your pictures here.

Hope you are all healthy and safe!

Stephen

Discussion on Byblis with Greg Allan

This meeting is available to all and requires pre-registration here due to limited space.
If you would like to become a member, please use this link to connect to our web page, then click on the membership tab to get to the Paypal button. Membership is not required to participate in this Zoom meeting, but you must pre-register.

Greg has been growing carnivorous plants since he obtained a Venus fly trap from a garden centre in 1992. 28 years later, he maintains a small but diverse collection in Birmingham, UK. His collection includes representatives from most carnivorous genera. His favorite genus is Byblis. After many years of trial and error, and countless failures, he currently grows all described species, and has distributed seed to growers all over the globe. Greg’s long-term observations of the genus led, in 2019, to the publication of three articles on Byblis in the Carnivorous Plant Newsletter. The first argued that Byblis should, contrary to the orthodox scientific consensus which was established by Darwin, be classified as a genus which practices active carnivory. The second documented for the first time that, in perennial Byblis, prey digestion and nutrient sequestration occurs almost exclusively nocturnally. The third article was a detailed cultivation guide, co-authored with Cindy Chiang, who is an extremely skilled cultivator of annual Byblis in Singapore.

This discussion will also include cultivation tips of Byblis.

An email with a link to the meeting will be sent to your email address the morning of the event.
Bug Day at Randall Museum - Changed format

The Randall Museum is holding a Bug Month celebration for the whole month of May.

If you would like to share a video or pictures of any of your carnivorous plants devouring a bug, please submit here and it will be sent to the Randall Museum to post on their social media pages.
BACPS Show & Sale - Postponed

Dear BACPS members, vendors, and carnivorous plant community,

Due to the COVID-19 situation, we've decided to postpone the Show & Sale to Saturday June 5, 2021 to ensure everyone's health and safety. This is unfortunate because we were all really looking forward to this event, but we need to keep ourselves and each other safe through these times.

Because we will not be able to hold an in person event, we will be holding a virtual BACPS Summer Show instead! More updates on this to come. For those of you looking to the future for the next Show & Sale, we plan to be back at the Lakeside Park Garden Center on Saturday June 5, 2021!

I would like to give a huge thanks to the BACPS Show & Sale Committee, volunteers, and vendors for helping us plan to make the 2020 event happen. We appreciate your support.
