Helping Families in Need

"Tough times didn't break us, they made us."

-Steel City Cotton Works

The human spirit is most evident in times of trial and as a church community
we are offered a great opportunity to care for our members who find
themselves in a place of unexpected financial need due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For those in our congregation who aren't at risk of financial crisis, this is a
great opportunity to help balance the scale for those in need.
We can offer our fellowship as comfort to others,
and we can also offer our resources.

SO HOW CAN WE HELP?

The most basic and simple way to help families
is to help offset the cost of food.
Offsetting the cost of groceries not only provides for a fundamental need,
it also relieves an expense to pay other bills. Through your contributions,
CHPC will begin sending Giant gift cards to families in need.
Session has also determined that every dollar raised will be matched
out of CHPC's Mission Fund. CHPC will also extend outreach to the
families of children enrolled at the CHPC Nursery School.
If you would like to make a contribution, you can write a check to CHPC
with a notation for COVID-19

Please mail checks to June Heyer at
College Hill Presbyterian Church,
501 Brodhead Street, Easton, PA 18042.
June is primarily working offsite during the closure.

For those who are in need during this time, PLEASE don't hesitate to contact
Pastor Merideth 609-303-0500; Pastor@collegehillpc.org   or
Pastor Susan 309-824-0279; associate@collegehillpc.org

Your College Hill Presbyterian Church family is here for you and
is blessed by the love we can express through our gifts.

To quote Galatians 6:2, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Let us all be in this together as a body in Christ and help shoulder the burdens of those of us who are hurting during this time.

THE EBENEZER PROJECT

These are scary times.  The world is different.  Routines are different.
God remains the same.
God loves us and wants to help us.
In the Old Testament, Samuel raises an “Ebenezer”, a stone of help,
to remind the Israelites of what they had been through
and how God had and will continue to be a help in times of trouble.

You are invited to raise an Ebenezer at CHPC
to mark the ways our community remained helpful, kind and compassionate
to one another. It is our hope that the flower bed will become full of
beautiful, colorful rocks to remind us of the time we spent apart
but also how we helped each other along the way.

Beginning Saturday, May 2, take a rock from the basket outside the ramp entrance,
or one you have at home.  Color or paint it.
Write a name of a helper, a name of someone you want to remember,
an image you carry during this time. Then, following all social distancing protocols,
return the rock to the large flower bed. Questions or if you need supplies,
please contact Pastor Susan at

associate@collegehillpc.org or by phone at 610-253-4792.

MUSIC MINISTRY MOMENTS

You’ll Never Walk Alone

Seventy five years ago, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical,
Carousel,
premiered on Broadway. In the second act of the musical,
Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the protagonist, Julie Jordan, sings
You’ll Never Walk Alone to comfort and encourage Julie
after Julie’s husband accidentally dies.
This song has achieved worldwide fame, and in some areas of the
United Kingdom and Europe, it has become the anthem of support
for medical staff, first responders, and those in quarantine
during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the “small, small world” category:
In the original 1945 production of Carousel,
Christine Johnson created the role of Nettie Fowler and premiered
You’ll Never Walk Alone to great acclaim.
Within five years, Christine would marry and move to Owensboro, Kentucky,
where I knew her as
my childhood friend Nancy Smith’s mother!

Today I thought of her when I saw this remarkable video of
You’ll Never Walk Alone,
performed by 300 people from 15 countries; I thought of my
CHPC congregation, whose presence at weekly ZOOM worship
reminds me that I’m not walking alone;
and I thought of these scripture passages:

Jeremiah 29:11 (NRSV): For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NRSV): For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Here’s the remarkable video. Enjoy!
