Survey, targeting Open Infrastructure service providers, seeks to establish deeper understanding of the OA and OS Open infra landscape in Europe

May 13, 2020

Dear SPARC Europe member,

We are reaching out to you today with a small task that, potentially, could have a ripple effect on the funding of essential Open infrastructure in Europe — and could even, eventually, directly impact your own Open activities.

For the past few years, SPARC Europe has been involved with various efforts, including SCOSS and, more recently, Invest in Open Infrastructure, to help secure the essential field of Open services that have sprung up in recent years, and that underpin Open Access and Open Science in Europe. Essential to this effort is a comprehensive understanding of these services in Europe.

We have devised a survey targeting infrastructure/service providers in Europe and we are reaching out to you as we need you to send news of this to important OA / OS services and infrastructure in your country. Their feedback is necessary for us to gain a comprehensive understanding of existing resources so that these services have a greater chance of garnering the funding support they may need in future.

We need your help in getting this 30-minute survey into their hands.

Through this effort, we hope to bring greater visibility and a deeper understanding of the many European-based scholarly communications resources on offer. This information should help funders – governments, funding organisations and agencies, institutions, libraries, service providers and others – conceive effective strategies for financing essential Open infrastructure.

We ask that you take a moment to consider any services that you think should be involved in this survey, particularly those resources that we might not know about from your country, and share it with them. Below, please find an email we have drafted that you are free to use when reaching out to potential survey participants. It includes a link to the survey itself.

The survey, which is being conducted for Invest in Open Infrastructure, should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. It will remain open until 5 June 2020. Once closed, we will use the following two months to review and compile the results, which will be shared during late summer/early autumn 2020.

If you have any questions, please reach out to survey@sparceurope.org.

Thank you very much for your support.

Best regards,
Vanessa Proudman

Please feel free to copy and paste the following text into a new email and share with any services you know of that should participate in the survey. The same text is available to copy and paste in this Google document.

Hello,

I am sharing the below email with you as I believe that it would be important for you to fill in this survey, which is looking to map Open Access / Open Science infrastructure in Europe. The survey is a first of its kind aiming to establish a more comprehensive understanding of existing resources so that services like yours may have a greater chance of garnering the funding support they may need in future.

Thank you,

[Your name]

Hello,

If you’re reading this, you are most likely based in Europe and a part of the rich field of Open Access, Open Science/Scholarship resources and infrastructure, many essential, that has organically developed in Europe in recent years. Many of these resources, as you may well know, are not sustainable — even though they underpin our evolving Open Access and Open Science landscape.

With your help, though, we are working to change this. By taking part in this survey, you can help us bring greater visibility and a deeper understanding of the rich offering of scholarly communication resources based in the European region; and ultimately, help attract more funding. Based on what we learn, we also plan to showcase some of you as leading open infrastructure champions.

Your feedback is critical. The information you share will ultimately help funders – governments, funding organisations and agencies, institutions, libraries, service providers and others – conceive effective strategies for financing essential Open infrastructure.

The survey, which is being conducted for Invest in Open Infrastructure, should take you approximately 30 minutes to complete and will be open until 5 June 2020.

If you are based in Europe and are running a service or infrastructure that supports OA or OS anywhere in the research cycle, we’d like to hear from you. In the event that you are responsible for more than one, please submit entries for each. Once closed, we will use the following two months to review and compile the survey results which will be shared during late summer/early autumn 2020.

Thank you very much for your support. If you have any questions, please reach out to survey@sparceurope.org

Best regards,
Vanessa Proudman
