Character Focus for Today: Forgiveness

Forgiveness is: “Clearing the record of those who have wronged me and not holding a grudge.” This means letting go of being angry or upset with someone for something they did to you or to someone you love. It doesn’t mean that you always forget about what they did, but you are choosing not to stay upset or let what they did affect you in a bad way. You can show forgiveness by not getting back at those who have hurt you, forgiving them right away, speaking kindly to them, and asking for forgiveness when you’ve done something wrong. When you show forgiveness, it keeps you from being bitter and angry and helps you show kindness to those who have wronged you. Also, it can help you be an example to encourage others to forgive and do what is right.

Forgiveness Activity

Forgiveness Activity: Overflow of the Heart

Supplies needed
A pitcher of water
2 non-transparent cups
2 small trays or shallow bowls
2 small paper hearts
Tape
Food coloring

Before you begin, tape a paper heart onto each cup, put each of the cups on a tray, and put the food coloring in one of the cups. Don’t let your child know that one of the cups has food coloring in it. Help your child pour the water from the pitcher into the cups so that they are filled and some water overflows onto the trays.

Talk About It: Whatever is in a person’s heart will eventually come out. When we don’t forgive someone, we have anger or bitterness in our hearts like the colored water flowing out of the cup. That could look like treating that person badly, reminding them of what they did, or speaking badly about them when they’re not around. When we forgive that person, however, we let go of the bad feeling we had towards them. Then what comes out of our heart is kind words and actions, both to that person and to others, like the water that came out of the cup without food coloring. If there is someone who wronged or hurt you that you treat badly or speak badly about, then you’re still holding on to unforgiveness in your heart. Take the time today to forgive them and choose to start talking to and treating them kindly.

Hands-On Activities

First Activity: Keeping Paper Dry Underwater Experiment

Supplies Needed:
A large bowl full of water
A glass or clear cup
Paper towel

Here’s a fun science experiment you can do with your child today:

Second Activity: Personal Play Time (30 min.)

This is a happy time when children get to be in their room and play something of their choosing by themselves. Siblings who share a room can be together. The children might greatly oppose this idea at first, but after several days (up to a week) they may be begging you for more time. Keep it positive! Be excited about it! After the time is up, they must clean up what they were playing with and "Personal Play Time" is over. After this, they must come out of their room. Changing up locations throughout the day keeps things interesting and creates anticipation for the next activity

Creative Play

Activity: Sheet Tent & Shadow Puppets

Supplies Needed:
Sheets
Chairs
A flashlight or lantern

Help your child make the tent by draping the sheets over chairs. You can also use multiple layers of sheets or put a blanket over the top so that it’s darker inside. Then put the flashlight inside so that it shines on one of the walls of the tent. Your child can make shadows on the wall by making different shapes with their hands. They can also try using toys or stuffed animals and see what kinds of different shadows they can make!

Quiet Time Activities

Journal

As the afternoon is starting to come to a close, have your children update their journal. Encourage them to write or draw something that happened today and also something for which they are grateful. (If they don’t have a journal they can decorate a notebook or make a journal from scratch using paper, a stapler, stickers and/or markers.)

After the devotional tonight, have your child write down in their journal one thing they learned from the lesson along with their action step.

Here are two review questions from yesterday’s devotional:
How did the father respond when his son came home?
