2020 National and Branch AGMs: Are you a Member?

CWRA National, Branches, and Affiliates are planning their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) for the new few weeks. This year all our AGMs will be accessible online, including the National AGM. This is a great time to learn about work your local branch does and what they're got on the horizon, and to get to know your Branch or Affiliate Directors. Check the schedule in this email and find more information about joining the meetings on our Events page. As new AGMs are scheduled, we will post them on the Events page and include them in the next newsletter. Registration information will be provided to members- you still have time to sign up!

Existing Members will get an email about their local/affiliate AGM. If you don't get one, check to make sure your member profile is up to date and we know what branch you belong to, and your current email! Some branches have already held their AGMs, as well. If you sign up now, or need additional help finding your AGM, please email manager@cwra.org.

Congratulations to our 2020 Scholarship Winners!

You can see a list of our past scholarship winners on our website. Keep an eye out for a presentation and an article by some of these winners later this year!

Water We Up to At Home?

Spending more time at home looking out the windows? Getting to know the growth patterns of the neighborhood trees and vegetation you pass on your walks? Consider spending some time engaging more closely with the nature close to you.
  • Install a rain gauge or other weather monitoring instruments in your yard or on your balcony and look into joining CoCoRaHS.
  • While we're waiting for Shoreline Cleanups to resume, check out the online resources on their website, and consider taking a trash bag and gloves with you on your walk to pick up trash along your routes.
  • Check to make sure your local storm drains aren't blocked (safely from the sidewalk)!
  • Have you done your annual sump pump maintenance? Good work! Now look up your local flood maps, and get more resources on your local flood risk and ways to prepare your home for flooding at FloodSmartCanada.
  • Look up your local naturalist society and check out their wildlife identification resources.
  • Search for citizen science programs in your province/city/neighborhood and check out the mobile apps they use (iNaturalist is popular and free)- can you help document butterflies, bugs, birds, or invasive species in your yard or along your walks?
  • Check your local library for e-books on plant and animal identification- or look for local online forums that will help you out if you post your photos!
  • Know a teen that might be interested in the Canada Wildlife Federation WildOutside program (held inside for now)? Send them the link for more information and to apply!
  • Learn more about indigenous peoples whose traditional territory you're living in, and their ongoing relationships to the land and water. Read up on the Indigenous Guardians Program (start there and here), and look for other local environmental projects or programs lead by indigenous people in your area.
  • Share your ideas for engaging with water at home with us @CWRA_Flows or on instagram at @cwranational!

Educational Resources from Project WET

Project WET is a US-based program offered in Canada to teachers and students through CWRA. The Project WET Foundation in the United States has provided access to some of their free educational resources electronically in response to the COVID-19 school closures. These resources are available to teachers and parents. The materials include books, workbooks, ideas for hands-on activities, and an online game. Many of these materials are available for electronic download. Additional materials and on-line training programs are available for purchase in US funds (please note that physical materials ordered would ship from the US). These resources are being updated frequently, so check back often- and share them with any educators you know!

The resources link is available at our Project WET page.

Update your member profile to keep receiving print copies of our magazine and journal!
