COVID-19 information and resources
Information and resources for schools can be found on CDE’s main webpage, click on the “COVID-19 Resources for Schools Link.” Exceptional Student Services Unit specific information can be found on the Office of Special Education main page or on the Special Education Director’s Corner.

Update special education director information
It is that time of year again when we begin collecting information so that our State Special Education Director and Fiscal contact information is accurate for the coming school year. Please review your district's information and then complete the form to let us know if you will or will not have any changes for your district. If you have questions, please email Suzy Shotts at shotts_s@cde.state.co.us

2020-21 Results Matter assessment checkpoint calendar
The 2020-21 assessment checkpoint schedule for Results Matter has been released. The deadlines are:

  • Fall: Nov. 6, 2020
  • Winter: Feb. 12, 2021
  • Spring: May 7, 2021
  • Summer (optional): July 30, 2021

Writing quality transition IEPs
The updated and redesigned guidance document, “Writing quality secondary transition IEPs that include the required elements of Indicator 13” is available for use as a training and professional development resource for those writing or reviewing IEPs for students ages 15 to 21. This document replaces the “Indicator 13 Compliance & Quality Tips."

Professional development opportunities
CDE has created a webpage of professional development offerings, which include opportunities specifically from ESSU.

Virtual Transition Leadership Institute
ESSU is hosting a virtual Transition Leadership Institute June 10-12. The theme for the upcoming institute is “Together, let’s reach new heights!” There will be two content sessions each morning and a team planning session each afternoon. Content sessions are open to all registrants. Team planning sessions are open to team members only.  Please access the agenda and additional information here

Deadlines

Preschool Outcomes certification (OSEP Indicator 7 Reporting)
Certification forms for Preschool Outcomes (Indicator 7) will be posted to the ESSU Data Management System (DMS) at the end of May. OSEP exits and Preschool Outcomes certifications are due by Wednesday, July 15. Please connect with your preschool counterparts to verify when they expect to complete their child exits. Please contact Tanna George at george_t@cde.state.co.us for technical assistance, and support with the OSEP Exit process.

Post-school outcome interviews
The post-school outcomes interview process will be upon us soon. If you need strategies to increase student participation in post-school outcomes interviews, please review the resources provided in the CDE professional development portal by accessing the following link: Strategies to Increase Student Participation in Post-School Outcomes Interviews.

Additional resources are available to prepare for the post-school outcomes interview process by accessing the following link:  Indicator 14

Timeline for the PSO process are as follows:

  • Samples available: May 1.
  • Interview window opens: June 1.
  • Interview window closes (federal requirement): Sept. 30 (Interviews complete and information recorded in the data management system).

Kaleidoscope Conference session proposals
The annual Kaleidoscope Conference will be held Oct. 5-6. This is a two-day conference for facility schools professionals serving students who attend Colorado’s facility schools. The allotted time available is 70 minutes per session. Proposal submissions are due by Friday, Aug. 14.
