2020 Watchword for Unity Women’s Desk:
Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.  Psalm 25:16

"Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.  He leads the humble in what is right,  and teaches the humble his way."         Psalm 25: 8-9.

The COVID pandemic continues to disrupt daily routines around the world but we know we remain in God's loving hands. Many of us are looking for the way back to "normal" lives - and it's very confusing when governments, scientists, business leaders, doctors and neighbors tell us different things.  It is not easy to recognize God's  voice in the midst of all this noise and uncertainty, but as Christians we believe it is there.  When it is safe to go back to work and school? How do we balance financial, physical and emotional health? How can I feed my family? We must seek help and guidance from trusted, reliable sources.  People throughout the world are making difficult choices everyday now. None of us has ever walked this path before.  Nor have our politicians, scientists, or governments. We pray for open, humble hearts, strong in our knowledge that the Lord is good, and He will teach and guide us.

One of the unexpected blessings of COVID-response restrictions on gathering to worship, sing, plan, and study has been the great creative use of technology - through Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and Zoom.  For many of us, learning to use new technologies has been humbling, but it's an amazing way to connect with others in times of isolation.

Sisters on our Advisor Board are all grateful for the opportunity to "attend" services on other continents and to experience how our Sisters around the world continue to serve and learn. It's also been a great chance to "pop in" on other congregations in our own countries and get new ideas and inspirations for how to worship.

A 21 year-old student at Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center in Palestine, pictured above, is preparing and baking sfiha pastries during the quarantine period at home - using skills learned from a rehabilitation trainer.  Star Mountain is also turning to technology to stay in touch with students during the quarantine and you can see how they continue learning at home on the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Center Facebook page.

Above:  Sisters in Antigua sharing a YouTube Children's Message for Mother's Day.

Deuteronomy 6:5-9 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words that I give you today. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you’re at home or away, when you lie down or get up.

In addition to offering worship as webinars, congregations in almost every province are using Facebook, WhatsApp and Zoom to take daily prayer groups, words of encouragement, Bible studies, and planning meetings into people's homes.  If you haven't seen the Moravian Cape Town South District Youth videos - you must!

Many Sisters throughout the Unity have expressed gratitude that they can use technology to connect their congregations in special ways during days of "Stay at Home."  While everyone longs for the time to gather and sing together, many have been encouraged to develop new skills and talents. The Internet is full of Moravian music! The Holy Spirit has been powerfully felt in these days, guiding the Church to continue its mission in new ways.

A few places to hear the Moravian spirit in song:
Hosannah Chorus:  - Britain
Christian Hands in Love We're Washing   - US
Prayer Singstunde - led by youth. Herrnhut Germany
Keep on the Sunny Side -Winston-Salem

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, "I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." Matthew 25: 35-40.

Sisters in Greyton in the Western Cape in South Africa gathered in rainy weather - with masks and prayers - to cook and deliver soup and bread to more than 100 people. They challenged local congregations to donate money to support their efforts.  "Cape Town and the surrounding Western Cape province have become South Africa’s coronavirus hotspot, accounting for more than half of the nation’s confirmed cases, which have gone above 10,600."  116 of the nation's 206 deaths have taken place in this region.

Like many other countries, including the United States, Britain and Tanzania, there are heated political tensions between those who want to resume economic activities and those who feel restrictions should remain.

Moravian women in the Cape Town area are serving the hungry and also trying to understand the many impacts of COVID-19 on their Sisters, including an increase in domestic violence.  Women in the church are exploring new opportunities to minister as the crisis continues.

Sisters and Brothers in many Moravian Provinces sense that the church is "on the move" - eager to serve their community and thinking less about what happens inside the church building.  Above, Sisters at New Beulah Moravian Church in Jamaica prepare Care Packages for members to share with others.  Below, Members of Konnoak Moravian Church in Winston-Salem collect food to donate with Sunnyside Ministries.

Above: In Albania, Kisha Luterane Moraviane Burrel congregation looking out for neighbors.  As of May 12 there have been about 600 Covid-related deaths in Albania, and the population is practicing social distancing and remains under a state of emergency until June 23 with very tight restrictions on time citizens can leave the house to buy food etc. When the COVID outbreak began in Albania in March, the country was just starting to build homes for 17,000 people that were destroyed in an earthquake on Nov. 26, 2019.

In Rungwe, Tanzania the established women's sewing group "Pamoja Tunaweza" is sewing masks. These masks will be given to vulnerable community members, to the sick, healthcare workers, hospitals. The Moravian Church in Germany is helping to support this project.  Many Moravian women in the United States and Britain - and surely in many other provinces as well - have been busy sewing masks and protective gowns to keep people safe.

British Pastor Lorraine Shorten is sewing gowns (below) to protect health-care workers - below.

Please continue to lift up our Sisters and children in all provinces of our Unity who suffer from domestic violence:The World Health Organization and UN Women continue to see alarming increases in violence as tensions rise from economic, health, and social stresses. Authorities are calling this a "shadow pandemic."

Consider joining the Thursdays in Black Movement in your country and possibly starting a local book/article discussion group to learn more about this critical issue and how we can make a difference.

Pray for and support shelters for women and children in need of a safe place to go.

Pray for all the girls out of school during this pandemic and women whose educational plans have been put on hold.  Pray for wisdom for those deciding when and how to start schools and universities again.

School buildings throughout the Unity have been closed down during the COVID pandemic - but many countries like Peru and Suriname have tried to keep students learning through WhatsApp and online apps like ZOOM.  In a few countries, including Germany, some schools are already starting to reopen schools on a very limited basis. Pictured above is a teacher at the Zinzendorf schools in Koenigsfeld, Germany as they prepare for some students to return while others continue learning online.  Pray for all our students, parents, and teachers trying to keep children engaged - and safe in these times.

Above:  High School senior EmmaGrace Stevenson in Winston-Salem being honored at Come & Worship's Drive-By Parade.  Below:  after driving by in their cars, the masked and socially-distanced women had to stop and enjoy a little brass music and take some pictures of the happy graduates.

Even during a pandemic, God provides blessings worthy of great celebration.  In the United States, most traditional high school and university graduation celebrations have been cancelled, but the women of Come & Worship Outreach Community in Winston-Salem planned a "drive-by parade"  to honor its graduating high school and university seniors.   Many churches have been involved in creative celebrations and outreach.  Small gestures mean so much more in these days of limited interaction. Praise God for giving us a spirit of gratitude, humility, and love.  Praise God for giving us grace and teaching us to share it with others.

Would you like to join us in a book discussion group on ZOOM?  (or start a local discussion group in your province).  In Winston-Salem, the UWD Back Porch Booking Discussion Group meets once each month to talk about a book that helps us reflect on our faith and the role of gender and justice in the Moravian Context.  Our last two meetings have taken place via ZOOM.  If you would like to join our next discussion Monday June 8 at 12 pm Eastern Standard Time (US), we will be reading : The Underground Girls of Kabul:  In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan by Jenny Nordberg.  Contact Julie for more information.

You can see past books we have read and discussed in the Event Section of the UWD Facebook page.
