Newsletter #172
May 21st, 2020

Editorial

Dear Friends,

This edition of our newsletter begins with an article about how the SARS-CoV-2 infection goes beyond the lungs and may affect not only the immune system but also the gastrointestinal tract. The article also considers whether probiotics and prebiotics could play a role in the fight against the virus.

Next up, we have an article by Mary Ellen Sanders about the new Lactobacillus taxonomic classification, which may facilitate our understanding of common mechanisms that could mediate probiotic health benefits. Changes in the nomenclature of bacteria within the genus Bifidobacterium are also expected in the foreseeable future.

You will also come across a new study that shows some evidence for early bacterial colonization of the fetal intestine, with the presence of specific bacteria that thrive under the selective conditions posed by the intestinal environment in utero.

Finally, you will find the replay of the plenary sessions from the 9th Gut Microbiota for Health Summit held in Madrid on March 7-8, 2020.

Happy reading!
