Principal's Message
What an unforeseeably memorable academic year 2019 - 2020 has turned out to be. As it draws to a close we reflect on the momentous, disruptive impact on our school community of Covid-19. Sadly, members of the CBS Kilkenny community have lost friends and family to this pandemic, and we empathise deeply with them and share their sense of loss. Some have suffered hardship and stress from other quarters. Our state examination students have endured uncertainty for several months, and our parents/guardians, students and CBS Kilkenny staff have had to adjust at breakneck speed to remote teaching and learning.

Despite this, there are positive outcomes, the main one being the indisputable evidence of our stoic resilience, community spirit, kindness, sense of responsibility and perseverance. I commend each and every one of you for the part which you have played in dealing with the pandemic and for reaching this point where we can experience a gradual return to normal life as we know it.

Every year, April and May are a very special time for our 6th Year students as they prepare to leave the staff and community of CBS Kilkenny, embarking as they are on the next exciting chapter of their young lives. Usually we celebrate this in several traditional ways to mark the end of their time with us as students and the start of something new. Sadly we are unable to convey our wholehearted best wishes face to face to the young men of LC2020, but the sincerity and depth of feeling endures, this time in many forms and in many languages. Follow the link to watch the heartfelt messages from our staff. https://youtu.be/U_yLrmBa-XQ

We wish each and every one of our students the very best over the days and weeks ahead. We very much look forward to seeing you soon again, in more certain times, and we hope that we will all emerge from these challenges with greater strength and resilience for the future.

Le gach dea ghuí

Leaving Certificate Class 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic has ensured that the Leaving Certificate Class of 2020 will always be remembered as a year group like no other.
We all thought that they were pretty special before the virus hit!
Take a look at these 1st Year pictures taken of them upon their commencement in CBS Kilkenny in 2014.
The entire CBS Kilkenny community wishes them every good fortune in the years ahead.
Look out for more photos throughout the newsletter!
Celebrating Blessed Edmund Rice
On May 5th we celebrated the feast of our school founder, Blessed Edmund Rice, remotely but as a community, through a series of online competitions and activities. This year's theme of Building Community Together could not have been more relevant to the times we are living in and the experiences which we are living through. Well done to all who participated and helped bring the spirit of Edmund Rice into our communities, and huge thanks to the Religion Department on this exciting and timely initiative.

Parents Council Summer Message

CBS Kilkenny Parents Council began the new school year with the annual welcome for 1st Year parents in the Bialann at the end of August, with our AGM following in October, where we had a very interesting presentation on “The Sandwich Generation”.
The Parents Council meets once a month and during the year we have been involved in the ratification of several school policies.  Due to the Covid -19 restrictions, our activities were curtailed in March and it was not possible to organise any social event this year.
We wish to thank all the staff of CBS Kilkenny for adapting so quickly to the “new normal” and in rolling out remote learning to the students. This has been a very challenging time for the whole school community and in particular for the Leaving Certificate students.
We wish to acknowledge the Leaving Certificate Class of 2020 and wish them every success and happiness in the next chapter of their lives
Guímid gach rath agus séan oraibhse, lucht an séú bliain sa todhchaí geal atá i ndán daoibh go léir.

Student Council Summer Message
This year the Student Council launched the Student Council Candle complete with school crest. It is intended that the candle will be lit on important school occasions to represent the whole school community of CBS Kilkenny and to promote the vision and ethos of Blessed Edmund Rice.

At this time of the year, we remember our Leaving Certificate Class of 2020 who are finishing their secondary education. For this class, the end of their time in CBS Kilkenny has been like no other. The Student Council, on behalf of the whole student body, would like to wish our Leaving Certificate Class of 2020 the very best of luck into the future.

TY Build-A-Bank Competition
Covid-19 restrictions were no impediment to our enterprising Transition Year bankers in Bank Me Later, who put their video conferencing applications to good use to apply the finishing touches to their presentation ahead of the Build-A-Bank National Finals. The theme of Bank Me Later focused on highlighting the everyday heroes we encounter in our lives on a daily basis. This theme couldn’t be more relevant in these unprecedented times. Well done to the team for their impressive performance and their dedication to this project all year!

Lockdown Musician of the Week
Well done to all the musicians who kept playing through the Covid-19 restrictions and entertained us all on social media with their brilliant performance. A special mention for Ms. Dowling on organising and judging this exciting initiative.

Transition Year Coordinator's Review

Following their return to school after their work experience and Christmas break and prior to the enforced closure of the school in mid-March, the TY students continued to undertake with enthusiasm a wide array of activities.

In January TY students availed of interesting workshops facilitated by Alex Walsh of Personal Safety Ireland; while early in February each TY class beat their drums as part of two Percussion workshops organised by the Music Dept. and orchestrated by Tom Duffy.

In Mid-February a large number of TY students embarked upon the annual TY Bavarian Tour, which once again proved to be both an educational and enjoyable experience. TY cohorts were involved in a training day conducted by the PDST to upskill PE teachers from the south east region in the new Leaving Certificate PE subject. We also had a visit from Garda Andy Farrell and Garda Aidan Fitzpatrick to present a talk on Safe Socialising. The two Gardai had previously been with us, along with the Chairman of Kilkenny Co. Council Peter Chap Cleere, to launch a Road Safety pilot project involving students wearing a fitted 3D device on their heads.

In the beginning of March, our Enterprise Teams gained significant success in the Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce Regional Finals held in the Lyrath Hotel. John O’Brien & Edward Daly's team were placed 3rd for, ‘Most Innovate Design Idea’, for their entrepreneurial project, ‘Clean Udder’, while Niall Fitzgerald secured 1st place and a, ‘Best Branding Award’ for his project ‘Kilkenny on Foot’. While in the senior competition Paul Delaney, Enda McCabe & Joseph Healy's ‘Locker Design’ was narrowly pipped into 2nd place from a field of 39 entries.

Our TY Drama group, The Millington Synge Players, competed in the national TY Briary Gap Preliminary Competition in Mullingar in early February. Under the direction of Ms Mary Meaney, they had successfully qualified for the national final to be held in Cork on Friday 13th March, only for the entire event to be unavoidably cancelled.

Indeed, we must salute all of our TY students for their dedication and determination throughout this year. Of course, it has proven a disappointment that we were unable to conclude the TY Programme as we would have envisaged. We wish them all well during the summer break, trust that they will have gained from this unique educational experience and will return to CBS Kilkenny determined to achieve their full potential in Senior Cycle.

Mr Gerard Morrissey.
